Regressia

About Regressia

There are a lot of people, both Hard Core Gamers and working Adults with a soft spot for the NES, who still like to play old school video games. Some of us play these games for the nostalgia, as a sort of comfort gaming (with no calorie gain - much better than chips or ice cream!), but that's not the whole picture. 3D is great, but there are some things that work best in 2D, and the problem is that these games just arn't being made anymore. If you're a lover of 8bit video games, Regressia was made just for you.

Released early in 2010, Regressia is a new RPG designed to look, feel, sound, and play like an 8bit game. This meant designing the game and its resources around the technical limitations of the hardware available in the 8bit era. The idea may be counter intuitive, but by designing around strict rules the game is able to achieve presentation and function that is not only self-consistent, but also consistent with the cannon of classic games. Unlike other retro games, Regressia doesn't coast on nostalgia - it contributes to nostalgia.

Project Goals

During the planning of the project several goals were identified:

  • To create a Fun New Game.
  • To engage and challenge Adult Gamers.
  • To finish a Professional Quality project.
  • To simulate an Authentic 8bit Experience.
  • To create All Original Content.

Each of these goals guided the development process in significant ways: All the content was custom made, right down to the audio samples used in the music files. As discussed above, all content adhered to a strict set of 8bit emulating guidelines. The game is complete and well fleshed out - no dusty and cobwebbed "to do" or "upcoming features" list here! The difficulty of battles was designed for, and play tested with adults, so as to promote thinking and strategizing, while the storyline and side quests were designed around themes not commonly explored by an RPG made for kids. It is my hope and belief that this has resulted in a unique gaming experience which you will enjoy.

Community

Regressia was made and is maintained by an independent game developer who is part of a large and active game making community. When you play this game you are not observing an ancient relic; you are discovering, along with other fans, a new game. You have the chance to be the first to uncover a new secret, to develop a killer strategy, or to share your interpretation of different characters and parts of the story. You may even be the first to download and play Regressia II! This is your chance to get in on the ground floor of what may become a new gaming series!
