can some one "Please" tell me how to set up a netgear router so i can host games? i think i read just about every post on it and tried everything and still can't get it to work. please help!
Why not go to thier site and look up the manual on how to forward ports? That would be a lot quicker.

Yeah right, thoes official sites are crap. It's best if you hear from people that actually can tell you instead of some archived pages. First, the fastest way to find your router control panel is do this:

  • Go to your run prompt in your start menu, and type in cmd. Once you brought your command prompt up type ipconfig. You should see abunch of stuff, write the entry that says, "Ip Address" down.
  • Now, take that ip address and paste it into the address bar if your internet explorer application. I don't know if it will work in mozzilla, I don't use mozzilla. Okay, you should have your lan address pasted into your internet explorer. I'll give you an example. Mine is 192.168.2.38; Now your Router ip address has to be some variation of this. Take your ip address ( ex. 192.168.2.38) and change the last number to 1 like this. (ex. 192.168.2.1). Then before you try going to it in internet explorer put http:// in front of it. So it should look like this. (ex. http://192.168.2.1) but with your ip. Try going to what you have.

  • If that doesn't work, change the 1 to 2 and go to that. Keep increasing it in increatments of 1 and if you get to 20 and it still doesn't work, then either try calling the company in which you bought the router, or use their email support if they have it. This should work though, I have figured most of my friends router control panels are either 1 or 10. Mine is 1. If you have any questions, reply.

Okay, after you find your control panel, now. You need to surf around your control pannel and look for something called, "DMZ" or Port Forwarding. There are pros and cons to both of these but I suggest DMZing depending on how secure you feel your computer is. I personally suggest DMZ but then again i've never had a single virus or even more than 2 spyware that couldn't be removed easily and my machine has been running smoothley for years. DMZ reffering to the Demilitarizing zone from what i've heard means that your computer is completely bypassed through your routers firewall. Your free into the internet! But of course this means your computer is openly to such things as hackers, spyware, and viruses and other things. Port Forwarding means that you open a port, so say you host a byond game on 2772 and you forwarded 2772, people could get through to your connection on that port. If you find DMZ, you'll need your ip address again. Remember how mine was 192.168.2.38? Well you need to enter the last number of your IP which is your lan address into the DMZ box. So I would enter 38 then hit save or submit or what ever. I don't know how port forwarding works correctly, so you can play with that. I never got it working on my router.

Here's a diagram I made to help you understand finding your Router Control Panel

I almost forgot! When trying to log in, the user name is almost always admin or blank, and you don't enter a password the firs time you log in. If you only have the choice of putting in a password, it's usually blank or admin untill you set one.

You could try http://www.whatismyip.com/ and copy that into the address bar. Worked for me anyways =)

ok weird thing is.... that website says my ip adress is 24.59.36.50, but to connect to my Router i need to put in 192.168.0.1, now i think i tried to set up that DMZ thing before and maybe thats why my ip address is dif? or maybe i messed it up or sumthing, cus even after i tried to set it up like a month or 2 ago i still cant host....

http://www.whatismyip.com shows you your external IP address. 192.168.0.[something] is your internal IP address. Your external IP address is shared by all the computers on your LAN, and is the one you use to access the internet. Your internal IP address is only valid for other computers on your LAN.

The command you were looking for is winipcfg. ipconfig works only on Windows NT/2000/XP.
