I got to school this morning, went to the library before registration and logged onto a PC.
I did what I normally do - tab for email, tab for byond, tab for home page...
But to my dismay, I found that BYOND.com (and subdomains) had been blocked by those that run the web filter!
I assume they saw the 'BYOND has games' bit of the site and went "zOMG! Game website? B-B-B-BANHAMMER!" without actually looking any deeper into the site.
So I was like, "hey, BYOND is educationamal" in an email to them.
I'm awaiting a response, keep you posted will I, mmmMMmmm.

The force is weak with the... school staff.

Eh, it's probably an automatic filter (yes, these are stupid, AND they suck).

Just use a Web Proxy.
google Anonymous Web Surfing

It isn't automatic - it's the actual domain byond.com that is blocked, and the system also blocks most of the proxy sites, as well as having a keyword based blocker.

It isn't the not being able to get to BYOND that irritates me, it's the fact that some n00b at the council has seen the words 'game' and 'online' in the same sentence and assumed that BYOND is some sort of flash game database or summat.

Hey, I'm working on it...
BYOND is a hobby site. It centres around playing games and game development. Unless you're actually going to start a BYOND club or intramural DM course at your school, you don't really have grounds to call it educational. =)

Elation :Hey, I'm working on it...

Its been done:

http://games.byond.com/hub/Genjura/FlashGameLibrary

Well Iam not sure wut u want it for but the filter at my school all I have to do it turn the http:// into https:// and it goes thru (Yours May not be soo weak). But also u could use google chached to see wut games are live and stuff.

Hell, if it makes 'em feel better they can easily ban games.byond.com, but I see developer.byond.com as a legit developer resource, games or not.
http://byond.com and http://games.byond.com has been blocked at my school for years. However, http://developer.byond.com is unblocked. :D
In response to Genjura
That's actually just a chatroom with a link to a bunch of online flash games. If any of those sites were to go down, the game in your 'library' would not work.

If your school is using IE, go to "search" and a google or another search engine will pop up (watever your school's default engine is...)

Then, just go from there search Byond and ... try getting in >.> (It might not work for your schools~

(Byond is unknown in my school nor my community but Myspace and youtube is blocked... but people still get around it. There is no point in that. BUT, there is a staff that have the access to ALL computers from 1 computer on her desk. She goes around closing everyone's window if they get around...)

Usually schools will store the filters in plain text files, just search for it and edit the permissions.

In my experience, the sites are blocked via a proxy server. You can't access the internet except through that proxy server, and it will simply refuse to serve certain pages.

The way they do it varies widely of course.

The whole BYOND set of pages just got blocked from my school. Crap.

In my current school, they don't block any sites (except porn and the like). In my old school, they blocked a lot of sites, but BYOND wasn't one of them.
I actually had it in reverse when I was at school. Appearantly I was in Soviet Russia, because school did not ban BYOND: BYOND banned school!
I was still banned at the time and my school got caught up in the ban. :\
It's all fixed now though no-one really cared: this is Holland; almost no-one knows of BYOND!
