Base2

This is a male base I recently made. I need constructive critism and suggestions on what I should do before I make movement states. Thank you.

ok i like your start you made on this base but its still alittle work to do before doing movements if you dont mind me saying.... here is how i would handle it

first the shape of the sides doesnt match the shape of the front and back(just alittle off....) so first thing would be reshaping it, also it needs to show the head and shoulders are not glued together lol kinda like a hunchback :P

id also recommend adding another colour, to make it blend better.

you probably dont understand me because i rambull on alot so i thought id show you :P

its so much easier to see the mistakes when zoomed in so why not lol

k here are the steps i tryed to explain, because dithering is hard/impossible on a 32x32 base icon its best to choose another colour so that the lightest and the darkest shade(not the outline colour, the shade), im guessing you no the colour is in the middle of these to lol(made sure the colours DONT blend well because that tends to leads to it looking like one colour lol.

maybe rethink how the arms are done, i didnt wont to change them, its best you find a style you prefer.

but yeh always check that from side to north and south states that you keep the shape in the same proportion.

so yeh here enjoy.

From the start I kinda had a feeling the sides were totally screwed up along with the arms a bit. Thanks for the tips and info, I'll work on it some more.

depending on how the rest of your game art will be handled, maybe think about applying some sort of light source IMO North-west light source is best on a 32x32 :P

New and what I think improved. This is the new base I made, is it any better? Anything that I can do to improve it?

Pull the right foot back a pixel and it should be fine.

The reshaping crits from chris defiantly helped the anatomy of your piece. But his re coloring was totally pillow shading. Any from of double outlining is also pillow shading, thats simply the fluffy/blurry effect it makes. http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat/shading.html

You can see the little differences it makes in your work.

I don't know how you learned to shade like this but it's a pretty advanced technique and best suited for 32x32 bases.

(Threw in an example of the crispy clean effects of not double outlining at the bottom)

What you're doing is using the lightest shade (Red) almost like a highlight and guiding it through the darker shades (it's basically Inside Anti Aliasing). This light represents what is closest to us with this technique you can have an ugly outline and still make things look good by defining the inside, It's almost like a second lifeline if you can't find the right shape for what your doing.

Look at the edits I made on your shorts, when you use this technique your highlight needs to define the object, notice how the "L" turns are at the knees. Then I just guide it through. As for that back edit, it's a hint how a side back should look like. The purple represents the arms, I just lifted them up so you could see what should be going on underneath.
