Casual Quest

by IainPeregrine

Casual QuestCasual Quest is a top-down action game reminiscent of the old 2D Zelda games. It was originally created by IainPeregrine as an entry for Tiberath's Casual Competition and has ever since been maintained and updated by IainPeregrine, formerly CauTi0N, and recently DarkCampainger.

As its name suggests, it is a casual game that anyone can jump into and play. Players can fight alone or band together with four other adventurers and face waves of increasingly ferocious monsters. Though you begin as a weak adventurer, you gain the ability to unlock new classes as rounds go on via the card system. The game features over 40 classes.

The graphics perfectly imitate the Ninentdo Entertainment System's limitations, with only three colours per sprite. They were all drawn by IainPeregrine. Each area has a distinctive look and palette and classes have unique looks to them to set them apart.

A scoreboard is present that tracks your total score and the number of waves you've survived. As with all of our other features, the game includes a number of medals awarded to you for reaching certain waves.

One of the most interesting aspects of Casual Quest is that it serves as a crossroad between other BYOND games. The game in itself is a spin-off of an earlier game of IainPeregrine's, Regressia, but also features a number of classes based on characters from other games. The way this works is that if you have a subscription to the other game, it unlocks a bonus class in Casual Quest for that game. The games and bonuses classes are:
  • Member's Adventurer, unlocked by being a BYOND member.
  • Hero of Regressia, unlocked by subscribing to Regressia.
  • Hazordhu Orc, unlocked by subscribing to Hazordhu II.
  • Decadence Crossbowman, unlocked by subscribing to Decadence.
  • Plunder Gnome, unlocked by subscribing to Plunder Gnome.

On top of the above classes, subscribing (which at this time of writing is $6 for lifetime) unlocks the tier 3 classes. While not required to beat the game, these high level classes do offer some fancy abilities that are helpful.

Also of note: If you use Facebook, there is a fan page for Casual Quest! Check it out, and maybe like it even?

This is a great game that I recommend everyone try at least once. Congrats, Casual Quest. (:
Congratulations to the development team!
This is a really great game. On my 4 years of BYOND, I always overlooked this game. Boy, that was a mistake, because I started playing about 2 days ago. Now I'm subscribed. Q.Q
Thanks for the feature!

I'm hoping that when the Flash client is released, we can rework the interface a bit so CQ is compatible with it. It's the perfect kind of game for playing in a browser, because it's so... well, casual!
idkmuch about it but im willing to try :o
In response to KururugiSuzaku

In response to Melmelgx2
That would be too serious, wouldn't you think? This is Casual Quest, after all.
Any chance people could Like the links to these posts on Facebook instead of just the gallery update? Frelling Facebook removed the option to avoid sharing the latter. I tend to see quick Likes on the pretty picture while the main post is ignored.
