So there I was, checking my email, wading through three emails from DivineTraveller sent precisely three minutes apart each, stating that he needs help, that he doesn't need help anymore, and that he needs help once again, when I see an email from Madman, Australia's leading Anime and Manga dealer.
"I wonder what tales of happy and interest they have for me today", I thought to myself while doing my daily routine of removing all the spam Thunderbird failed to pick up.
But what awaited me upon viewing this email you ask? Well, mine eyes, they are damaged and unshielded. I thought perhaps I may have misread the title of the linked blog post. But alas, it was not meant to be.
Warrner Bros is acquiring the rights to make a live action Bleach Movie. My heart, she is torn asunder with hatred of live action anime adaptations, and yet an unexplained enjoyment of the Bleach Anime (yes, I'll admit it, I enjoy Bleach).
"How could this get any worse!?" I thought to myself. But, alas, yet another paragraph in, we learn the director for 50 First Dates and Get Smart, Peter Segal, is pushing to make this terrible love-child. Don't get me wrong, Get Smart and 50 First Dates were good enough movies, but a lot of the comedy involved in them will just not work for Bleach.
I actually haven't seen Dragonball Evolution. Mostly because the trailers alone put me off. And I doubt there's a narcotic in the world strong enough to make me enjoy it. But the day it enters my DVD player is coming.

I feel your pain. M Knight Shamalamalon is directing the live action Avatar movie, starring an all non-Asian cast.
|
I was actually going to make a display image of who I thought would make the better non-Asian cast members, but I didn't get around to it while writing this post.
I'll do it in a short while and get back to you. >.> |
I managed to come up with this before getting stuck and distracted. >.>

And double posting, but it's a separate point:
I don't think it's possible to ruin an anime more than DBE did. The only things I saw that it had in common with my beloved series were names. Don't ever watch it! If there has ever been 2 hours of my life I wanted back for wasting them, it'd be those two hours, LONG before I'd consider time spent being tortured at the DMV. |

On a completely unrelated note, the bleach anime filler finally ended this week. Next week is a recap episode, then its ulquiorra vs ichigo, finally!
|
I actually just watched the absolute worst movie in existence the other day: Bad Lieutenant. Somehow, it's even worse than Warhol's films.

Plan 9 From Outer Space. Saw that movie once on TV (part of it at least). That movie was so cheesy. :P |
I really don't hold Bleach or Dragonball with all that much reverence.
The thing is, there's this certain formula of anime that does like this: 1) Protagonist discovers he has a power within him/her. (Over 90% of the time a him because a whole lot of machismo is about to go down.) 2) Protagonist encounters a bad guy or other difficulty that s/he has insufficient power to overcome. 3) Protagonist discovers new method to improve his/her power. 4) Utilizing this method, protagonist now overcomes bad guy or difficulty in a big power display. 5) Go to 2. 6) Protagonist's hard work finally pays off and the universe is a better place, forever. The thing is, we never get to #6. No matter what big bad the protagonist(s) takes down, it won't be long until another, bigger, badder comes down. Further, we know the protagonist isn't really going to die no matter what apparent climatic battle they're involved in (nor how much blood apparently goes surging out of their Soul Reaper bodies) because they're the star of the show who has overcome dozens of big baddies already. From the viewer's perspective, you're just being hooked and dragged along forever. As the wiki says, "according to Tite Kubo, the ending of the series is not yet planned out or written.[1]" Yeah, of course it isn't, you hack, you're just milking this gravy train for all its worth. You know what the ending will be? Here's a spoiler: there won't be a proper ending because they'll just stop making it when people lose interest. It also bugs me that what the protagonist is gaining is simply "power." It's like, hey, I found out how to hook up a bigger battery/engine. Oh, good for you. It underplays the value of technique, it lacks a certain interesting subtlety as a result. I can actually tolerate Naruto for this reason - it's usually not "lets cram more Chakra into ourselves" but rather "here's a plot development of how a new and rather detailed technique was found." But not to piss overmuch in your corn flakes if you like the series, I'm just venting why I couldn't really get into it. I'm like, "oh great, here we go again." I think even the Japanese know this - Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo was basically a parody poking fun at this formula by deliberately giving their protagonists absolutely ridiculous powers to refine. To get back on topic, yeah, they totally screwed the pooch with Dragonball Evolution. I don't know why people think going from cartoon to live action automatically makes something so much better that they can throw the cartoon plot completely out the window, but it seems to be a real disturbing Hollywood tendency you can attribute as far back as Popeye (1980). I expect The Last Airbender to follow suit. |

I take it you havnt watched naruto in awhile. That is more or less all its become. As far as dragonball goes, it actually did have alot of that technique, back before dragonball, during the martial arts tournaments. But yeah, that is the formula most shounen follow. Id suggest Berserk, Gantz, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, and One Piece if you want a really good story with good action and multiple developing characters (as in not just the main character, but the villains, and supporting characters, and even minor characters.) |

The Dragonball movie started off AWESOME, then went to crap as they destroyed the storyline, failed to match the anime characters in apparence, and had a HORRIBLE climax were Piccolo turns out to know about Goku's monkey form and was planning to use it to his advantage all along(I don't think this goes with the anime at all either).
On a side note, asking for help is for the WEAK! |
