Even a few months ago we kind of wondered how long it'd be delayed, but yes, they've gone for the sensible option of holding the General Election on the same day as local elections, which always tends to help turnout (particularly for the Labour Party, which struggles when its on alternate days).

6th of May is Election day. Labour is set to lose, Conservatives to win. Yet again, the question of whether the Liberal Democrats will pull through and become the leading opposition if Labour does really badly is what those of us on the left are wondering.

In Northern Ireland, its quite likely that the Ulster Unionist Party will disappear from sight completely, and the Social Democratic and Labour Party, their republican moderate opposite could go the same way too leading the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein totally dominating NI politics.

For smaller parties on the mainland, its a question of whether the few independents will keep their seats. Will RESPECT hold onto their central London seat, virtually totally reliant on the Bengali Muslim community and will it make gains in Birmingham where it was so close to winning other seats as well in 2005.

For more fringe parties, such as the Greens and the BNP, it'll be their test to see whether they can capitalise on Labour failings. Greens are looking pretty smug, being in control or participating in many local councils which will end up being their main targets.

BNP success will measure just how serious the fascist menace intends to be politically, and how worried people like myself should be.
BNP will get no where and gladly so, Nick Griffin is an idiot.
I be voting for anyone but the Conservatives. They screwed up localy and they will screw up everything else if they win the general election.
"BNP will get no where and gladly so, Nick Griffin is an idiot."

A fellow White convert said once: "Nick Griffin is not an idiot, he is very very clever". And I tend to agree with her, he has essentially made White supremacy an acceptable political position in the modern world, which the British Union of Fascists, NF and Combat 18 never achieved.

And I used to be one of them! :p

Edit: But I don't think they are likely to win a seat, but the fact they've won in Proportional Representation elections, the London Assembly and European Parliament will probably convince others its ok to vote for them.
It's pick your own turds time in the UK again. I look forward to some serious disappointment.
