"The People should not be afraid of the government. The government should be afraid of the people."

What are your thoughts on this quote?
That the Government should not over power people.

Yet they do it anyways.
I dont really think if you live in north america or western europe that you have anything to complain about in terms of government overreach. We have it pretty good when the worst thing to happen to freedom in the last few years has been the patriot act, and while spying sucks the government of western democracies doesnt really ask anything of you other than to pay taxes. I dont see what the freaking teaparty hysteria has been about.
I'm afraid of Government incompetence. That said, democracy tends to mean you get who you (collectively) deserve. As such, I am afraid of the general public collectively.
Yeah, in all honesty, we should be more worried about the government's inability to get anything done efficiently than about it being megalomanic or anything.
The governments incompetence is directly related to the general peoples incompetence. In a mixed government, like the United States Federal Republic, there is an agreement between the government and people. Although, when the people rely on the government too much, the government receives power. As a result, the government becomes dependent on people..The cycle consists until the government becomes intolerable and a form of "revolution" occurs. In that case, the government created serves a quick fix, and later becomes just as bad.

Thus is the fate of most governments. This is the result of lack of education, lack of opportunity, stereotypes, illogical beliefs, prejudices, and even most current sciences that unconsciously limit potential by establishing norms, averages, etc..Which many people mistake for "healthy", etc.

Psychology even states "Levels" in Morality, etc..When it should be a "so far" case.

Broad topic..I could type..Papers upon papers on this. Points being... The quote is incorrect..Nobody should fear anyone.

The best human quality is the inability to judge self-potential. Why? Our mind constantly changes(neuroplasticity) and is a result of environmental changes as well. Therefore, Humans are seemingly infinite in potential, regarding their ignorance.
I would respond with, "there's nothing to fear but fear itself." And it's an important saying to remember in that fear drives us to acts of foolishness.

Whether it is a government fearing its people, or a people fearing its government, the result is a broken fusion which forbids one from properly serving the other.
