It's been a long time coming, but NEStalgia is finally on the fast track for release. Get ready and mark your calendars for:

Saturday, March 27th

Yup, that's only a week and a half away! In the meantime the testers and I will be putting the game and the server through its paces in one last quality control check. From day one you'll be treated to the most polished and professional game that BYOND can possibly deliver.

An incredible amount of work has gone into NEStalgia, and I couldn't be prouder with the results. Our team has created something that will shatter your idea of what a BYOND game can and should be.

I'll be posting more NEStalgia teasers and previews leading up to release, but for now you can enjoy a bunch of new screenshots!

Will you compete in the Feats of Strength?

There are many different modes of transportation in NEStalgia.

Balloonists will take you to cities you've previously visited.

Talking to the balloon pilot.

Getting a ride on a balloon!

Arriving at our destination.

The fabled DWO 1.90 Slime Races return!

Gambling away my savings at the races.

NEStalgia's scenery is diverse.

Ice sliding puzzles galore.

As you'll notice on the right, I've started up a Twitter account for Silk Games. I'm not a fan of Twitter and I don't know if it will actually be effective, but I'm going to experiment with it for awhile.. Follow us or add it to your RSS reader or whatever because I'll be posting NEStalgia related news updates on there frequently!
You're serious? You pick the date my best friend is getting married to release? I am disappoint.

ah well, I'll have to get on Sunday, a day behind everyone, and just no life the extra hours with Red Bull.
Can't wait, looking forward to playing it.
Now the real fun begins. =)
$3><Y
This game makes me forgive Silk for not finishing DWO, it's just that good. :)

Wow, that's a major endorsement coming from you! Tell that to CM and he might come back and try the game out ;)

Heck yes. That's the only way to play MORPGs!
looking forward to checking it out. :)

I think IainPeregrine beat you to that.
I haven't tested in awhile. I be there for this last stretch ;). Been pretty busy lately.

If you're referring to Regressia, that's an unfortunate example of a project with a very beautiful coat of paint but completely broken/non-existent gameplay. The choppy writing and story don't help it much either. I applaud the time, effort and the skill that it took to pull off the presentation, but no one in their right mind could judge it to be a worthwhile game at its core.

If a poorly designed single player game like Regressia is your current golden standard for BYOND games then my guess is that you're a person who is very easily distracted by shiny objects. You could make the argument that Regressia has the best original graphics on BYOND, but that's about it. Because it only has half of the equation, it's not even in the same league as games like Feval, Ultimatum, Last Robot Standing, Proelium II, or (from what I've seen) Teridal, which have the complete package - a quality presentation combined with great gameplay.
I'm psyched! This game will for sure bless Byond's current garbage.
Using BYOND for what it was originally intended for. =) I like it.

Why don't you think it has good gameplay? I thought the demo was good.

Honestly games that require repeated gameplay such as killing 100 monsters of the same type to gain one level is not a genuine idea of good gameplay.

Yet you're supporting a game that prides itself on being a nostalgic tribute to the very games that feature that sort've gameplay. Granted, NEStalgia has some modern bells and whistles cloned from world of warcraft, what about Regressia is so much worse than Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy or any of those types of games?

The others were developed by full-scale teams and were balanced to the most perfect extent to keep the player intrigued in the game while having these gameplay elements.

Some thoughts:

A big red flag was that the balance was way, way off - like it hadn't even been play tested for balance. Level ups were pretty inconsequential. Experience rates were crazy low. I eventually just edited my savefile in order to get through the demo.

The battle system was a joke. You basically just spam the spacebar a lot to advance through the battle readout. Hit the enemy. Enemy hits you. Hit the enemy. Enemy hits you. Every now and then you might find yourself pressing the down arrow and then hitting the spacebar to use a bandage.

Even for an NES RPG tribute game, there is just no excuse for a one vs. one battle system. Especially in a single player game, because it's not like you have the headache of multi-user parties to worry about. This system was just very boring, no strategy required.

Even some of the cool (if not tried and true) ideas presented as you trudge through the game didn't add much to it. The most inspired part of the whole demo was the ship battle at the end, and that's not really saying much.

The fact that this game is single player is the final nail in the coffin. If most gamers are like me, they have a list of old NES/SNES games that they're meaning to get around to playing someday. I can't even fathom paying money for Regressia when I can boot up any given NES or SNES RPG rom that I haven't played yet and get a 100x better experience for free (or for half the price if it's a game available on the Virtual Console).
Silk, for the sake of the entire BYOND community, could you please try making a blog post without blowing yourself?

Saying, "the most polished and professional game that BYOND can possibly deliver" is like giving the finger to every developer on BYOND while simultaneously telling the BYOND staff their development suit is only good for 8-bit NES games. I'm trying really hard to get pumped for NEStalgia, but you aren't helping any.

If you don't know how to get a hold of CM then I certainly don't. :(

Forgiving doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see DWO finished though. ;)
