"In a recent Gallup poll, 90% of people surveyed believe that alcoholism is a disease. Most argue that because the American Medical Association (AMA) has proclaimed alcoholism a disease, the idea is without reproach.

But, the fact is that the AMA made this determination in the absence of empirical evidence. After reviewing the history of the decision, it would not be unreasonable to suggest that the AMA has been pursuing its own agenda in the face of evidence negating the validity of alcoholism. "

That's some good completely ignoring the two paragraphs I posted and the link giving discussion as to why most people believe it's a disease when it is not.

It's okay, you stick with your spoon fed beliefs that dictionaries are truth, the bible is a doctrine of the absolute and the AMA are completely infallible.

I'll be over here in a sane country watching some of the worlds best medical scientists continue to make breakthroughs in a cancer cure.
except it's just not the AMA though. you're choosing to ignore that. If you google it, the clear majority are saying that alcoholism IS a disease. how can you possibly claim that NO. It's ALL WRONG. I am right because I have this one source that says I am.

i like how your argument instantly changes into "insult the competition! it'll make it seem like I won!"

This is because KatieKate is exactly the type of person Murrawhip described.

It's a better strategy than "THE DICTIONARY SAYS IT'S TRUE THEREFORE IT MUST BE! I AM CORRECT BECAUSE GOOGLE SAYS THE MAJORITY AGREE WITH ME EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE GIVEN EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY THE MAJORITY AGREE WITH ME AND ARE STILL WRONG"

ohhh and i'm in australia too.

And my heart bleeds (literally, inherited heart defect) for my country now. ... No, I'm lying, I'm fully aware that Australia has it's fair share of wrong people.
Okay, my internet is about to die, so I'll leave you with: I hope you're aware the americans are now making fun of us because of you insisting on being incorrect.

Also, it's 3am. Go to bed.
Lol. Good night Tiberath..
Damn, I must have a disease because I'm addicted to sex. ;[
I appears that you have a common case of sexitis.
I thought I stated this earlier...but whatever. Alcoholism is not a disease. Popular opinion =/= fact.

Anybody can post a definition on here, but it lacks a real source, so you might as well use wiki. A REAL source would mean there was a study done with scientific and/or medical backing proving or disproving said study.

So based on common knowledge, Addiction =/= Disease. We know this. I have a caffeine addiction, not a disease. People with a methamphetamine addiction don't have a disease. These are BOTH examples of physiological(and psychological to a lesser extent) addictions to drugs. They aren't diseases. Another would be tobacco(Nicotine) addiction. Again, not a disease.

So explain HOW alcohol is different. It's a psychological(and in extreme cases, physiological) dependency on alcohol, or rather the effects of alcohol.

The argument was originally made stating alcoholism = disease, therefore, the burden of evidence is on proving it is. I've stated enough to disprove it, so please, counter with EVIDENCE.
Kate and the other blockhead are basically saying that any addiction is a disease? AIDS is a disease, an infection. not an addiction. Alcohol is an addiction, not a disease. Douchebags

You're going to get Dictionary definitions, AMA diagnosis and Wikipedia links. As all three say it's a disease, and concurrently, all three are wrong.

Caffeine and nicotine are my vices. Clearly I have two diseases. =O
