(Don't hate on this cause I am doing an educational blog post...)
What is alcoholism exactly?
Alcoholism is a disease that causes a person to lose control over their drinking behavior.
They cannot function in everyday life without having alcohol in their system.
Alcohol abusing:
-Drinking too much alcohol
-Drinking too often
-Drinking at innappropriate times.
It's noticable that 20% of adults have lived with an alcoholic.
-11million children currently today are alcoholics
Alcohol is involved in 75% of domestic violence cases.
Some of this that some don't know, is that this could cause a person to become depressed and they would start to neglict their health and issolate themselves for serveral hours or so.
-Friends can start to go away from you(losing a friend)
-Unpredictable behaviors
-Extream anger outbursts.

Calling alcoholism a disease is an insult to people with actual diseases. I agree. Alcoholism isn't a disease. It's a form of ignorance involving alcohol. There is no blame on anything/anyone else except the alcoholic. |
According to this, I'm an alcoholic. I get depressed sometimes, and I spend most of my free time alone.
Alcoholism isn't a cure, it's a dependency for alcohol. Diabetes is a disease. You can stop being an alcoholic, you can't stop being a diabetic. Some people just can't handle their liquor, that's all it boils down to. And no, alcohol isn't at fault, weak spirited(haha, a pun!) people are. |

Alcoholism is an addiction, not really a disease. Also, edumicational blog post lol

Woah, alcoholic children, that's hardcore. Do they sip their vodka out of juiceboxes?

As others have said, alcoholism isn't really a disease. It's an addiction that can obviously have major consequences, just like any other addiction can, though alcoholism is a very bad addiction to have. It can't be cured by waiting it out or getting medication or even going to the doctor. You need to conquer it mentally and work at defeating it yourself, which is extremely hard to do. You need to have some amount of sympathy for these people , but at the same time they got themselves into it.

When I described it as saying a "Disease" I mean it's something a person would have that they are addicted to it, not in a bad way at all.

Alcoholism is a disease that causes a person to lose control over their drinking behavior. Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol (and not any one specific type of alcohol, mind you). You'll find it to be common in depressed people and probably people with post traumatic stress syndrome. As these people are most likely out to drink to forget their troubles. I also find it difficult to believe that 11 million children are alcoholics. I get the feeling people are mistaking parents buying kids booze for a party with alcoholism. It's the kind of thing politicians would spin to raise the prices of alcohol (most likely premixed drinks) *cough*. I assume that, like all other addictions, if an alcoholic doesn't partake in alcohol on a regular basis, they start to feel withdrawal symptoms. Increased desire for substance, uncontrolled shaking, cold sweats and increased irritability would probably be what an alcoholic would go through, similar to a smoker. I doubt they'd get the nausea (maybe from the hangover), paranoia, pain and other such more extreme symptoms a heroin or crystal meth addict would get. But I'm no expert. I've only met two alcoholics, and never really had any real discussion with them about it. |

do they come home from school drunk, and beat their mom with their belt instead of doing their homework?
