The player death/resurrection system in Acheron's Awakening is pretty much identical to the one in World of Warcraft.

When a player is killed, they're removed from their corpse and transported to the Ankara graveyard as a ghost. At this point they have the option to revive themselves on the spot. However, instant revival comes with the penalty of ten minutes of "Resurrection Sickness", which makes the player weak and vulnerable to attack.

In most situations players will opt to skip instant revival and instead travel back to their corpse in ghost form. As a ghost, no one else can see you, but movement is just the same (you can't walk through walls or anything like that). Once the player is close enough to their body, they can revive themselves with no penatly. Upon reviving they start with 1/2 HP and 1/4 MP.

An unfortunate player begins the walk back to his body

If you log out while in ghost form, instant revival will be forced upon you when you log back in and thus you will suffer ten minutes of Resurrection Sickness. Dying will also carry the penalty of losing 1/4 of your gold, which is why it is wise to put your gold in the bank as often as possible.
Not unique, but a nice idea nonetheless.

Even if you travel back to your corpse as a ghost?

Even if you travel back to your corpse as a ghost?

Yup.
I say make it so your corpse contains some trinkets of your's, maybe not the most useful ones, but just some. And after ~30 minutes somebody can loot it.

Yeah.
I say you drop the 1/4th of your gold, and monsters that see it or players could get it.
If another player kills you, they can pick up the gold that you drop when you die.

So more incentive to PvP? :p

*edit* How long have you been working on this game? I've been working on an RPG based off the World of Warcraft system for just over a year now. :( And it's quite similiar (obviously) to a lot of the features you've been posting here.
well this is sort of depressing, since it does take away yet another purpose of a healer-type class... if there is going to be one.

In DDO there are several ways to revive yourself once dead (yes I know that game got bad reviews, but I found it to be very entertaining.).

1. Party Cleric: If you have a high level cleric in your party, they might be able to resurrect you, with a lower XP penalty!

2. "Resurrect Shrine": There are specific points in dungeons that allows resurrection. As a ghost, you and whoever picked up your "soul stone" when you died (if someone in your party did pick it up) must travel to a resurrect shrine to revive. Of course resurrecting this way gives you the normal penalties.
You can use resurrect shrines only once.

3. Tavern Resurrecting: Throughout the world of DDO, there are taverns. In most of these taverns, there are NPC clerics that you speak to to set a "resurrection tavern" (I forget the exact name). If all the other methods of resurrection are unavailable, then you can resurrect at the tavern with the usual penalties. Usually not a good idea, because if your party was in a dungeon when you died... you're going to have to make your way down there.
--------------------
I'm pretty sure there are a lot of other appealing methods of resurrection... it's just... I am definately not in favor of this one. Depending on the size of the world for this game, it would take AGES to get back to where you died. Not fun.

Have a litte faith! Yes, there are still healing spells and spells to revive dead players. As far as walking back to your corpse goes... it won't be nearly as tedious as you make it sound. Have you played a game with a system like this before? It actually works very well.

How long have you been working on this game?

I started working on it in December of 2004 for a few weeks. I ended up scrapping what I had and started from scratch again during the summer of last year. I had a busy summer, so I worked on it on and off.

The total number of condensed days that I've actually worked on the game would probably in the range of 2-3 months.
Will there be multiple graveyards like in WoW? That way you can be transported to the nearest one and save walking distance.
There is just the one graveyard, but it is located in a pretty central place on the island.

If you die inside the dungeon, it's a short walk from the graveyard to a place that will teleport you to the floor that you died on.
