Within BYOND's last few updates there have been options added that would not require a person to install BYOND. After reading about this and seeing someones post about them developing a application for game creation documentation,it has got me thinking that BYOND is really becoming a more powerful program and can be used for more than games.
I have been developing a few applications in the past couple weeks. One application i have been developing is a Darts Scoring Program, the other is sorta like a very basic Windows Notepad.I think more people should start developing applications in BYOND. So I am opening the BYOND Application's Guild.
There are a few standards for submission to this guild.
1. All Applications must seem like a standalone program.
2. All Applications must have a Help file.
3. All Applications must have a About option, which includes a reference like "Created with BYOND" and give a link.
4. All Applications must be in a semi-workable state.
That's all i can think of at the moment.
Some feedback would be great also.

This sounds like a great idea, I really hope this guild gets some attention. ;D

Sounds like a good idea, I hope it works out. BYOND needs some place for utilities. I wonder if there's any niche for applications that can't be standalone but are still useful as applications, though, such as "instant messenger" types.
Anyway, reading your standards it might be good for organization if you marked finished, polished, fully functional applications as favorites, while works in progressed would be listed normally. Then at least when people sort through the "games" list, then there will be a way to tell which applications are good to go and which might be buggy. |
That would be a really good idea, i'm currently trying to figure out how to make my site more like a guild. Such as submission and such. Can normal members do this?

Submissions are done through a game's hub page. I believe anyone who is a BYOND member and who has joined this guild can submit things to this guild. I don't know if submitting demos/libraries is any different than submitting games.
The first thing to do to make this site more like a guild is to remove anything that doesn't belong in a guild, which typically contains information specifically about a certain topic. So having a bunch of random games listed here is very un-guild-like, as is having your personal information displayed and such. It would also be good to restrict posts in this guild to topics related to the theme. You also spelled application wrong in your subtitle. |
I like the idea; BYOND is a brilliant tool that can be used for much more than it has been used for. It's nice to see insight beyond "NARUTO SUPER DUEL KAKASHI ONE PIECE 9001."
|
I also think that being able to share BYOND-made utilities with other communities would be a great advertising tool. I just hope that at some point they include better byte-level support for BYOND so that we can create utilities that actually interact with files for other games. BYOND-based saved game editor for Commercial Game #5012?

Yea, I thought the same thing Foomer. That was my idea when i added the requirement of having the About option with a link to byond.

Nice idea! It's always fun to make applications and such with DM in my opinion. I hope to see this guild being active in the future. I'll see what I can come up with myself for some "applications".

By the way, there's no need for the apostrophe you put in Applications for the guild name. You could make it "BYOND's Applications Guild" or just "BYOND Applications Guild." No need for the apostrophe.

I was writing an icon utility and I'm currently writing something I believe to rival Calus' OurPad. I might look into getting them into the guild if I find they're ever share worthy.

I created OurPad a while back, essentially, it is a text editor that allows users to share text online. Of course, it currently isn't a standalone program, nor do I wish to dig up the files to make it. But I am willing to create some applications if you are willing to toss me some ideas.
