So I went to Avatar with no expectations whatsoever... and thank God I didn't have a cyanide pill handy during the movie or I wouldn't be here to write this.

As I wrote last week right after watching the film: Avatar is the most frustratingly crappy movie to come out in a long time. Embarrassingly cliched plot, terrible characters, and a steaming pile of childish political commentary. All of the beautiful art direction and effects are completely wasted on this idiotic film.

I went to the movie with Jaredoggy and my wife Becca. Right after the movie Jared pointed out that he "liked that movie better when it was Fern Gully". Becca said she "liked that movie better when it was Pocahontas".

I agree with both of them. And whoever came up with this hilarious stab at James Cameron is a genius (it's an image): Proof that Avatar is actually Pocahontas in 3D.

This movie could have been a great popcorn flick. It might still be, if you go to it wearing earplugs, and you close your eyes every time the cringe-inducing main villain comes on screen (he's more of an effing cartoon than the damn aliens).

The amazing art direction and the beautiful world they've created make me want to like this movie so much... but I just can't cope with how terrible the rest of it is.
Finally! Someone agrees with me!
Nice thing about most other movies that follow the same archetype of Avatar is that they're about an hour shorter. I hate sitting that long, particularly when the movie sucks.

Indeed. And yet even though the length of the movie is at least an hour too long, the pacing is so poor that the ending actually feels really rushed. Screw this film.
This movie was so dreadful, that I actually had to make up excuses to why I kept going to the bathroom during the movie to my girlfriend. What's worse about the situation is that I wasted twenty bucks and my girlfriend kept hitting me after the movie because I left her alone. Now I will never trust my friends over my instinct, because my instinct was right all along.

The movie wasn't worth the twenty bucks, nor was it worth getting beat over the head by my girlfriend.
the digg comments made me rage. they justified Avatar's plot by saying that lots of stories tend to have the same over-arching plot-- but that simply doesn't justify it. there need to be changes to the plot that actually make it worth seeing compared to just, you know, watching Pocahontas again.
Eh, am I the only one on BYOND that actually liked the movie?
It was a movie anyone could understand, my friends' younger brothers, sisters AND my own grandmother where able to come out of there understanding and appreciating the thematic concepts of the movie, I think this only adds value to the film.

It's easy to see the movie was a family film. Why anyone would criticize it for being what it is and not something else?

Indeed. People who comment on Digg are dumbest people on the internet... and they've deluded themselves into thinking that they're the smartest.

Understandable doesn't translate into good. There is a difference between a high concept film (a film that is understandable/relatable to a wide audience), and an formulaic, cliched piece of crap.

In terms of the plot there was absolutely nothing original about Avatar - apart from the minor twist that they're using remotely controlled bodies. All of the characters were cookie-cutter, one dimensional caricatures that were practically parodies of themselves.

Saying that Avatar was a stupid movie on purpose because it was intended to be a family film also doesn't work. There are tons of classic family films that are smart and original.
Why is everyone dissing on Pocahontas!? It was a brilliant movie! You should all go die.
Dammit. I was so going to make this video, but somebody beat me to it. Oh well:

Bootleg

yeahhh you know what im talking bout
I did not think the movie was that bad. It obviously did not live up to the hype though. I saw it in digital 3D, but I am definitely going to see it in IMAX 3D. I honestly believe that people just want to believe this movie was great because it was created by James Cameron.
Yiff in hell.
I could tell it was cliched the moment I saw the trailer.
You're a terrible, terrible person.
hahaha

has vermolius has created an imaginary girlfriend for himself? and now uses it to bash people he dislikes?
