...is because they're too busy posting images of the title screens. Seriously people! There is way more to making a game that drawing a cool title screen with Photoshop. Most screenshots people post usually consist of A.) A title screen that tells the viewer absolutely nothing about the game, or B.) Screenshots that show a map made out of RPG Maker sprites that don't even hint at the gameplay.
I'd wager that most developers posting screenshots of their AWESOME title screens are doing so before they write a single line of code for their game. Perhaps developers are confused: PEOPLE DON'T COME TO BYOND FOR THE SWEET GRAPHICS, and they certainly don't come here to look at title screens.
If you post a screenshot of your game, then do it for the right reasons. DO NOT just do it to show off the graphics, because it will be next to impossible to impress people. You’re pandering to an audience who own PS2s and Xboxes… do you really think that you can compete? Additionally, don’t post a screenshot when all you’ve done coding-wise is define the turfs and drawn a map.
Here is a good example of the type of screenshots you should be posting, as demonstrated by Kunark. Why? Because this screenshot is showing something new, unique, and interesting. The graphics don’t grab your attention, the gameplay does. Bottom line: your screenshots should say something about your game.
If you’re developing a game, the title screen should be one of the last things that you create. Most of the crappiest games on BYOND have cool looking title screens backed up with non-existent, lame, or pointless gameplay. Therefore, a title screen means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. In fact, nowadays title screens are almost a sure indicator of a worthless game beneath the surface.
If you’re developing a Pokemon game, then show a Pokemon getting caught. If it’s a DBZ game then let’s see a freaking Kamehameha wave hurdling towards another player! Screenshots for role-playing games should show off the game mechanics and interface. Images for strategy games should give players an idea of how the game works.
Don’t be lazy. Make a great game and take some screenshots of the game in action to show off your hard work. When you’re about done coding everything else, pop open Photoshop and draw yourself a title screen.

My games consist of a good title screen AND good gameplay :O (Well, the ones that I still work on do)
|
DO NOT just do it to show off the graphics, because it will be next to impossible to impress people. Incidently, when Aaiko posted screenshots of Seika 2, the graphics blew me away. |
Takaryu:
Oh and I hope you weren't reffering to me and my post with that Pokemon login screen Nah dude I wasn't talking about anyone in particular... I've just noticed a trend where people post nothing but screenshots of their title screens lately. |
I disagree with some of the things you said, SilkWizard. I do however, agree that graphics mean nothing, and it is all about the gameplay. The part I disagree with is that title screens mean nothing in a game. That is all wrong. Title screens usually give the first impression of a game. If the title screen is very well done, has something to do about the game, etc. then it can help a game out very much. Look at Seika's title screen. It is a warrior in armor holding a sword, facing a skeleton type dragon. That attracted me to the game. It is all about first impressions my friend. =P

I think somehow that that blog post was somehow directed to me, don't worry, I'll show a few gameplay screenshots of my game this weekend(which is the time of when I do most of my programming).

Giyaritsuku Hou:
I think somehow that that blog post was somehow directed to me... Honestly I haven't even looked at your page. About 20 million people have been posting pictures of their title screens lately. GokuDBZ3128: Title screens usually give the first impression of a game. You're absolutely right, but like I said, the majority of crappy BYOND games have nice looking title screens. Because of this, players aren't going to have much faith in the value of a game due to its title screen. |
SilkWizard:
You're absolutely right, but like I said, the majority of crappy BYOND games have nice looking title screens. Because of this, players aren't going to have much faith in the value of a game due to its title screen. Hmm so those kinda games are basically made by graphic makers rather than coders? XP Fancy HUD and graphics still do make the game look nice <.< And a lot of times I go into a game with a nice hub icon. Meh, I guess that's just me :P |
The point that's being made is that in general title screens don't tell you anything about how the game actually plays. Screenshots should be more of people playing the game, not people looking at the title screen.

Takaryu:
Fancy HUD and graphics still do make the game look nice <.< Well, let's just say that I have yet to see a BYOND game with a fancy HUD or graphics. Zaole: Hehe. Show us a picture of AA's title screen, if it has one yet. :p It has one, and it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be. The first time that you'll see AA's title screen will be the day that the game is released and you log in :P |
I just post them most of the time to get advice for them cause like the game im mkaeing the whole create proc revolves around images.but yea most of the thigs you said are true about tittle screen and sucky game play.

The part that annoys me is that most title screens aren't that great. My DMO title screens are a good example. I've basically taken desktop images from the official YuGiOh website and ran them through Image Ready.
I think they look nice and I put a fair bit of effort into them, but they're nothing special. The only time I've ever done a title screen worth posting about is with my old title 'Crystlex Advance'. Even then it wasn't the title screen itself it was the login/character creation system. A fair few people said they liked screens, but I think they liked that it had a consistant theme more than anything else. If you're interested take a look here. |
DarkView:
If you're interested take a look here. I like the opening screens... they're easy to use and definitely made me interested in the game. Choosing the home city on the map was pretty cool! |

Oh and I hope you weren't reffering to me and my post with that Pokemon login screen O_o I didn't have any contact to the creator of that game so I just put it there a long with my procrastination blog :P
