Now, Barack Obama is half-white, was raised in Hawaii and Indonesia, and went to Harvard. I can't say he's had a typical life for anyone, even ignoring breaking it down into racial groups and the influence that has. I believe that him speaking in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) would be as offensive as any white guy doing it. Your thoughts?

Just a question brought up by hearing about this:

It would be unprofessional. The white house has no room for ebonics.
|
Depends on audience... He could speak "baby" talk with Malia and Sasha or "lovey dovey/Barry White" with Michelle and none of them would be offended.
|
The entirety of that quote made me lol. Out of everything in the current world to be concerned about, they choose that.
|
Shows what America is concerned about.
A black man being president. or The economy, the war, etc. |
Though I agree with the sentiment that the country has more important things to worry about, I personally believe that nobody on the planet should speak in ebonics, regardless of race, class, or location.

But after a little thought I decided that I would in fact be offended if the president spoke ebonics simply because EVERYONE or the vast majority can understand plain english and while the same cant be said vice versa...I don't really see a problem with ebonics though as long as the person knows the formal english alternative as well..I for instance speak ebonics (big whoop, wanna fight about it?) yet I know when to use it and when not to (akin to slang), easily getting my point across for the intended audience. |

What fizzy said...How is just speaking how everyone else does in your environment trying to be cool (albeit out of a lack of education or whatever reason)? And, it is indeed just as capable of expressing such ideas to the group that uses it, not necessarily outsiders though for which it isnt even intended for majority of the time..

Also, ebonics doesn't really quite sound how its stereotypically portrayed...Just throwing that out there...0_0

But the real question is, did Glenn Beck really rape and murder a young girl in 1990?
|
Glenn Beck...
Nobody takes that crackhead seriously. Also he still hasn't denied the allegation that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. |
