By now I'm sure you're all aware of BYOND's Isometric feature, and a lot of people I've spoken to on the subject are really excited to dive in and start playing around.
Aside from the obvious benefits board games and puzzle games will have, which has our friends at BYOND Strategy and BYOND Casual giddy with anticipation, I'm wondering if anyone out there has seen the potential this new map format will have for BYOND RPG?
So, BYOND RPG developers, has this new feature given you new incentive to revive old projects, or have you been beaten with the inspiration and creativity sticks respectively to design something new?
(I'd like to mention that while this is in private beta, now is the time to start the development process. You can't jump right in eyes closed hands first if you don't have the tools you need to do it. So now it's time to hit the books and start designing!
Also! Don't forget to check out any semi-recent forum activity!)
Thats awesome, it isn't in 'private' test tho, I just downloaded it from the builds page ^ ^
I was looking for some more info in the isometric feature, Thanks. |

Not a problem, its always a downer with testing an unpublished version >.> but I do enjoy the head up on it.

I still can't picture any game on BYOND being good in isometric. Maybe I just need to see a finished product or at least a halfway decent one to be sold.

It's still in private testing however, a dedicated team is given all the release notes, examples and everything necessary to use the software, diagnose bugs and suggest add-on features. A lot of the bugs (such as copy and paste in the icon editor) have already been addressed and fixed and whatnot. Generally they don't mind the release getting out provided people don't run to the forums complaining that feature A doesn't work when the person has no idea how to use it. So it's all good. =) |

BYOND is quite capable of handling the isometric engine it's been given. Granted I haven't actually witnessed anything in multiplayer. But then again, we've only had the beta for short time, and I haven't had the time to do anything in it (I suck at normal graphics, isometric? Nope, I can't do squat...). I'm hoping once it comes out of private testing that I'll get a heads up on some interesting new developments in the RPG world. Something to blog about. I reckon a game somewhat like Baldurs Gate or even as Darke mentioned, Diablo 2 will be possible (maybe a little less graphical kickassery, but you never know). |

I'm waiting for a good BYOND Diablo-like. :] Show me the graphics. We could make it a competition! Provide all graphics necessary to make a Diablo-esque isometric game, and we'll bug Tom for some memberships or something. ;) Or better yet, someone can bug the Arts Society to host a competition on making graphics for a Diablo-Esque isometric BYOND Game. Then, WE can use those graphical sets as a baseline for OUR competition on making that game. EVERYBODY wins! (Of course, this would have to take place after the space game contest. Don't want to lose possible greatness by having people working on two competitions at the same time.) |

I took the liberty of suggesting this on their forum and linking back here. That would certainly blend in well with the release of the update, as it could heat up the hype right away. Tom/Lummox JR could even directly link to the contest/results in the news article and thus generate more traffic for both, the Art and the RPG guild ;) |
In my experience, unless a game is anime-based the Art Society (as a whole) really wants nothing to do with it. This is just from seeing SuperAntx trying to get people to do some stuff (PAID) for his AWESOME game, Decadence. And also my attempt to throw some cash around for a pixel artist, as well.

There's no guarantee they'll deny the idea, but then again, there's no guarantee they'll accept. I could always bug a few of the higher ups in that guild whom I have on my MSN list, take it up with the powers that be if they accept, and work out some sort of compromise around awards and whatnot.
I'm good at politics, and if I'm not, then I'll certainly learn quick enough. <.< Then again, 3am, sleepy and just about willing to agree to anything isn't the best time to be discussion potential ideas for competitions. I tend to speak what I think a lot at this time. |

The fact is that after years and years there are very few good BYOND games, period. This isometric gimmick isn't suddenly going to usher in a new era of awesome games. All we'll see are the same types of shitty games that happen to use an isometric perspective. |

All we'll see are the same types of shitty games that happen to use an isometric perspective. I don't recall asking "do you think we'll get a bunch of crap games", I believe I asked "have you found any inspiration for new projects or have you come up with ideas for anything new". So if your response is: "I think we'll see nothing but the same crap games", then your answer is obviously: "No Tibby! I haven't found motivation for older projects nor inspiriation for new ones!" But seeing as I'm in charge of this guild, I think I'll give people the benefit of the doubt, and ask potential developers and developers alike if they have any ideas. You know, rousing a bit of guild activity and breathing some albeit small life into the guild. Then you have to take into account the fact that "good is relative to the player". So you're free to say BYOND has no good games (although that's a bit broad, considering we're in an area dedicated to a specific genre of game). And to be honest, new games ushered in, be them crap or not, is still new games for the guild to list. Which is again a breath of fresh air. As BYOND Anime has proved, bad games don't necessarily mean unpopular games. And for a game to be bad and popular, it means some people like the game. Ergo, it can't be all bad, it just doesn't happen to be in your specific taste, which is fine. But with that said, it's unfair for you to sprout "all games suck!" So, are you going to change the tide and release a good game? |

You're in my guild, essentially commenting that all the developers around here are terrible, in a post that's asking if they've found motivation/inspiration? And you honestly think I wont have a problem with this? Unlike you and I, some people do actually care what people think of themselves. Comments like that, especially in a post like this, might just have a couple of those perspective developers drop their ideas because they don't want to be made fools of. If this new feature inspires people to create new original games, then more power to them. That's the most positive thing I think I've ever seen from you around BYOND. Congratulations! No, no, it's totally fair. 99.9% of games on BYOND are absolutely terrible. My opinion says otherwise (and is more positive, which is a good thing). You're free to argue it if you wish, but it'd be a complete waste of time for both of us. As we are both stubborn enough to never agree with one another on the matter, no matter how much we battle it out. I have. The reason that I'm so "controversial" around here is because I'm one of the few people on BYOND who actually makes good games. If I were just some random player or ripper, nobody would pay attention to what I say in the first place. The only relevant game to BYOND RPG you've released is Dragon Warrior Online, and that was eight years ago (subsequent updates notwithstanding, I don't know when that game stopped receiving updates, I'll say 2004 as a rough guess). It's one thing to make a good game, but unless it's released, there's nothing to go on but screenshots and youtube videos. And, just in case you think I'm being mean and singling you out when I could easily have replied the same to Sariat way earlier, is because I don't know him at all, so that means there's a slight chance my arguments might be able to change his mind. You on the other hand, much like myself, are the kind of person who, when an opinion is formed, is set in stone. And it takes an incredible amount of effort to change your mind on something. |
I played with BYOND's built in Isometric engine. It's got a bunch of bugs in it. So I stopped messing with it altogether until a official release is launched.

If BYOND developers were actually worried about being made fools of, the majority of the games that litter the hub wouldn't exist in the first place. Pushing out a crappy game that is so bad that it's embarrassing doesn't seem to be at the top of the list of concerns of the average BYONDer. If your goal is to defend the quality of the games and developers on BYOND, then good luck. That is an argument that you can't win. Tiberath wrote: That's the most positive thing I think I've ever seen from you around BYOND. Congratulations! That's a nice meme that people have started (the idea that I'm always negative on things that are BYOND related), but it doesn't hold up. The fact is that I am one of the last defenders of what makes BYOND so great, and in doing so I have to acknowledge the things that threaten all of that. Have Anime games destroyed the developer base? They have. Is this community grossly mismanaged? It is. Are "fan games" made by incompetent, lazy developers? They are. Do we need to acknowledge the reality of BYOND's situation in order to improve it? We do. |

Not to mention the 'true big icon support' is going to ease a lot of trouble.
