So, RollingStones says that Jimi Hendrix is the #1 guitarist, I have to disagree. He is good at his own style, and somewhat insane, but really the only thing the guy did was discover feedback. And for some reason all because of this discovery which he used in his music, he is apparently the #1 guitarist. Really though, he isn't THAT great. What is it with RollingStones? I didn't even see anyone with the title Guitar Master (A title recieved that shows you are a real master of the guitar) even on the top 20, and their are only 4 of them. Just to prove to you a bit that Jimi isn't the greatest, do you think he could play Bass with his thumb, rhythm with his index and middle finger, and lead with his ring and pinkie finger like Chet Atkins did? Could he strategically use his whammy bar, with a wah-wah pedal and the switch on his guitar to get DJ effects like that of Tom Morello? Could he rip of a lightning fast lick that is graced with the influence of Classical music and Heavy Metal?
Truth is, he is just the best at his style, but not the best at the whole thing.
So what's your choice?

Van Halen all the way!
|
Had to go with Hendrix.
Les Paul was more of an inventor than a guitarist, but still plain amazing. And despite the fact that Hendrix is not my favorite guitarist, he is the best in my opinion. EDIT: It really depends on your musical preferences as to who is the "best guitarist" in your opinion. . |
I really don't believe there is a 'greatest guitarist'. Playing guitar is about emotional and thoughtful expression through music. You can be really skilled at playing the instrument, but it doesn't mean you can play a tune that really moves you.
Music is just an expression, not a skill you can be the best at. Although if I had to choose, it would be David Gilmour. :D |

I don't see Steve Vai, this is most unsatisfactory. I don't see Eric Johnson either. Polls don't let me put infinite answers, so sadly, you have to click the Other. |

Write-in candidates always lose though. But then were they really worthy? |
I think you'll find that Ralph Nader has ALWAYS been worthy. I'm in the UK, but I'd obviously vote for Ralph Nader for the lulz if I could vote in the US.

Andy LaRocque would be my personal favourite.

Why hell isn't Van Halen winning?
He has the best guitar solo of all time. Eruption people, eruption. |
He actually did play 'Bass with his thumb, rhythm with his index and middle finger, and lead with his ring and pinkie finger' someone posed the exact same question to him. But yeah, Jimi Hendrix did more than just discover feedback, he learnt everything about guitaring himself, he learnt things with his first guitar (with all strings) by listening to the records etc. he was exceptionally talented. Not only that, but he was completely in tune with guitaring, if he wanted to play something, he would. He could do anything physically possible on a guitar and more.
But yeah, my opinion. Mixed with some facts ;D |

Not tryin' to turn over your boat or anything, but if he could "Play bass with his thumb" then he wouldn't have Noel Redding on the bass. =P |
