I promised you results on Sunday, didn't I? According to BYOND standard time, I've still got about 3 hours to deliver that promise. What, you live in Australia, and it's Monday already? Hey, not my problem Kangaroos can't keep proper time. Besides, it's only been two weeks, this is the fastest any BYOND competition has every been judged!
Seriously, though, stop paging me.
The zip with the entries is still uploading, so it may be a couple minutes before it's available. Also, the prizes have yet to be determined or distributed. I'm expecting to hear back from our sponsors as soon as they see the results. So if you got a good place, just sit tight and I'll post the prize information as soon as I get it.
Congrats to well... I won't spoil it. Congratz to the winners. Now go read the document.
Edit: You can also view a list of all developers who were ranked "Complete" or higher, by viewing this hub page. If you are on that list and would like to proudly display your accomplishment on your members page, simply add that hub to your favorites and the medal will show up on your blog shortly thereafter.
Sounds like you and your testers had a lot of fun playing them all :P
I've actually been spending a lot of time in the last week trying to refine my game. Although I haven't gotten around to adding more weapons, I have redone the weapon and movement systems so not all shots follow you like homing missiles :) Thanks for hosting such a fun event, and for getting the results to us so quick! |
I'd like to thank you for A, hosting this in the first place, and B, providing useful suggestions for game improvement!
Had a lot of fun, and hope to participate next year. |
For most games, especially those in the top ranks, there were three times more suggestions than we could fit. I tried to do my best with Acebloke's RPG; that's sort of my prize to him, to dump all the suggestions we have into that document.

I thought the reviews were done very well.
Thanks for putting so much effort into testing everything. |
On second thought, I enjoyed the description you gave my game Iain. =P.
Congrats to the winners. |

AI attacks itself. *wince*. There's always one more bug... Thanks for running the competition again, Iain, and I fully intend to polish up Gears of War at some point. This will likely involve someone else drawing - I can't draw for the life of me... I assume by "Redrawing of movement permissions is clunky." you mean that you click on a unit and it takes a while for the display to draw? That was a problem I found earlier with the scout bot (Until I made it turn for free and rewrote its movement-range-generation proc), mostly because it's running through a lot of crap. I really ought to come up with a way to fix that - either by improving the algorithm, or more likely, generating them at turn start and caching them. EDIT: Just played Turtle Towers. Great game - good job Oasiscircle. I'm also now at the top of the Turtle Towers standings. ;) |
"It uses a mix of original graphics and copyrighted graphics used without permission, though." I swear I didn't know it was illegal to use those Megaman sprites. :( "Notes from play testers: I expect to hear someone screaming "MORTAL KOMBAT!"" I laughed at this for quite a while. :P "Why do evil entities have to live in these blasted mazes?" Yeah, I realize now what a mistake that was. It must have made your face look exactly like this when you had to playtest the game. "Significant runtime errors and bugs associated with loading a game after dying, as the map isn't cleaned from the previous game, fix this and the copyright issues and this would be polished." Again, I'm sorry about this. I really didn't have enough time to do extensive bug testing. I'm hoping to polish Turtl up and release it in the near future, though. Thanks for all the trouble you've had to go through to co-ordinate this event. It was really fun and I hope you do it again next year! |
Awesome!
I'm surprised I did so well to be honest, I really went all out and wasn't sure whether or not it would be playable or not >.> I now have to go back and redo half the stuff so it works properly! PS: If you get to the Airship racing, your probably half way through the game (but probably not half way through the level grinding >.>). |

All your "dungeons" are bloody forest mazes, the encounter rate is up at something like 1/4, and running never works (and when it does, it's only after the monsters have had their way with you). You have to try and anti-grind to keep the game challenging. I'm surprised I did so well to be honest Like I said of Gakumerasara's game, when I forget that I'm judging and start to feel like I'm playing a game for fun, that's a good sign. |

I just noticed that the review of C_Dawg_S's game, didn't get a final pass:
Result: Disqualified C_Dawg_S - GiaD: Disqualified Two buttons, one makes a turtle fall onto the turtle stack, the other makes the world fall onto the stack and outputs "You Loose". Disqualified. Bug: "You loose" can be displayed if the world bumps a turtle who is not yet "grounded". Note from play tester: "This game's awesome!" Edit: Fixed. |
I'll go ahead and give Oasis the Membership. Congrats.
Edit -- Sent. Confirmed. By the way I sent mine in half way through the competition. Not at the very start. :P |

I sent it off not knowing whether the second half of the game even works :P I didn't have the time to test it lol although _theoretically it does_. I do remember setting all the 3rd dungeon + monster stats down a lot though when I realised they were way too high. Its not my top priority but updating this years entry is definitely on my todo list. |

Oasis was lucky to win by a fluke and not have anything in common with older entries. Yes, Oasiscircle made a game which was similar to another game which was rated highly. Well, is that wrong or okay? Take a side, but don't sit around making vague accusations. |
Vic Rattlehead wrote:
Oasis was lucky to win by a fluke A fluke? How do you figure? Turtle Towers had a great balance of gameplay, content, and polish for a game put together in a day. Just the title screen is in a league of its own :P I'd say it was a clear winner compared with the other entries (no offense meant to the other participants, myself among them ;) and not have anything in common with older entries. But Iain said it was similar to an entry he enjoyed from '08, so I don't understand where you're getting this (typo?) |
And so, I continue my GIAD tradition of coming up with cool and pretty stuff but neglect real development and gameplay.
I actually regret not going with my original idea, which was to make a game in the style of AfterBurner.
