I agree that people fuss too much over them. Although, I wouldn't ask anyone to change their approach in the forums. It's sort of a ying/yang thing and it works provided they continue to have their little successful community. Continue to bash them and they will continue to do what they do. It's worked for years now hasn't it. ;)

I agree with treating the Anime people with more respect, but why tolerate Rippers? They rip off other people's work for the chance to basically do whatever they want in their own game. I used to help people with Coding issues back before I kind of went inactive on Byond, and most of the Anime developers either were working on a rip, wanted me to do all the work for them on their game, or disappeared off the face of Byond soon after. While I have nothing but respect for the few anime developers pushing out games with their own code/art, they are by far the minority.

Really though, rippers wouldn't rip, if the owners of the ripped sources weren't ignorant.

Between the few people with RSC extractors and the constant turnover of development staff on a project (all of which may or may not have the full source), you really want to blame the owners?

That's like saying that rape victims were asking for it.

When did that developer come to BYOND? Also, if the only example that someone can point to is a game that (as far as I know) is never hosted and is not downloadable, then I rest my case.

How is Efencea not downloadable? Try here, not under my account. I've been around for quite awhile, just never got as far on anything as Tayoko and I did on Efencea. That said, it's unfinished and unbalanced. Otherwise, I think it was a better effort than what else we have going on 'round here.

Also Vermolius came to BYOND in 2001, and to me, he is by far one of the greatest programmers on BYOND.

I'll take the compliment but I can't say that I'd consider myself one of the greats.

If you are the owner of an original game, it's your responsibility to keep the game in safe hands. Would you believe bobbyawesome if he said he would code your new uber Naruto game?

Unless of course, you're like Darker Emerald and you release your source on purpose. Which I find no problems "ripping" from that.

Rape, and Rip are 2 totally different things. Those 2 didn't make a great comparison.
inb4 the word rape, oh wait. Too late on that one.

An overdramatic analogy for sure, but it's still more fitting than saying it's the owner's fault for the overabundance of rips rather than the rippers themselves.

Great, Ganing managed to make himself look like an idiot again.

I will say that it took me more than 2 years to be able to program what I can now. I'm not that great either. You shouldn't expect anyone who joined in the past year to do otherwise.

I released the first version of DWO about a month after joining BYOND, and Proelium after about 7 months. Making a BYOND game isn't brain surgery.

DM is a great language, especially considering how easy it is to learn. It's a shame that it is going to waste.
Rippers will always excist and I find it interesting that the people who complain about the rippers stand on the sidelines and complain, but don't get up and create.
I had a good laugh, thank you everyone. BYOND's community being insular as usual.
I'd like to say one thing.

I have tried to advertise BYOND games outside of BYOND before. And almost everytime I have tried, a fair amount of people have said something derogatory about the game.
For one single reason, anime games (well technically the overall poor quality of games made with BYOND, but that is almost always associated with anime games).

When people outside of BYOND think of and see BYOND games, they think of very poor quality games, anime or not (more often than not anime however).

For this single reason, I refuse to give anime games, rip or not any kind of respect.
Do you really think I (or anyone) want to spend months making a game, only to have people insult and dismiss it because they saw a bunch of crappy anime games on the BYOND website?
I think it's safe to say that one of the main reasons original games on BYOND don't get enough players is lack of advertisement. Telling people that these games exist.

Guilds need to start doing a sort of 'Game of the Week' post where they introduce one of their games to the public, review it, do whatever they want, but tell the community about its pros and cons and overall try and garner more players for that game, in doing so making their own guild and BYOND more active while also introducing more people to more original games, hopefully making the anime-guild-activity:every-other-guild-actvity ratio more balanced.

Well, hell, if you want to get Technical with it, the BYOND Key "Efencea" joined BYOND in 2009, there happy?

My friends and I joined BYOND because of its Anime games. Belive it or not, Fans of the show -like- being able to play simple little RPGs based on the shows they like.

I'm not sure what point Silk is trying to make, but yeah, The Efencea team and both Efencea games where made and publicized in the same year.

As far as I know, all games on Byond, Rip-or Non has it's purpose. BYOND has a really bad PR among both outside Developers and players.
...

just because the "team" key was made in 2009 doesn't change the fact that the developer joined in 2001.

What's technical about that?

That would help, if more than 20% of BYOND actually used forums except to come on and defend rips.

But the majority of those people are little kids, or act like it.
Hell, most of the "fans" know next to nothing about these anime series other than what they want to believe.

Also, I am willing to bet there is a lot more, a hell of a lot more people who are indiferrent, or even dislike these anime shows.

The very poor quality of games on BYOND (which are largely anime games) gives BYOND, and any games made with it a very bad reputation outside of BYOND.
If anything anime games on BYOND have done it more harm that they have good. True enough that without them right now BYOND would have hardly any members or games, but that is because all those potential members and games have been driven away by anime games.

Like I said, I simply do not like anime games because if I use BYOND, no matter what I do, or how hard I try, outside of BYOND it will always be associated with these crappy anime games.
I could name the damn game "Grimdark western game saga: 2 Nukes were not enough", and people would still associate it with some crappy naruto or dbz game.
Magic Man.. When I was working on Naruto Alliance, I recall some time ago sharing the same view that you currently do, so I desired to seperate the game from BYOND so that it would not be only visible through this website, we created our own website (Never completed it.) and when I advertised, I told the people it was created with BYOND. People didn't scream "OMG NO MATTER HOW GUD THOS PICX LUK YUR GME MST FAIL." quite the contrary. People looked at what I presented and said, "So BYOND has decent games now."

My conclusion? If you present them with something that looks good they will overlook the tag thats been stapled to BYOND over the years and actually check out what you have to offer.

Maybe your just not showing them something they want to play or something that looks good. Take that however you like.
