The La Canada Flintridge fire (also called the Station Fire) is only a couple miles away from where I live. You can see the massive plumes of smoke from almost anywhere in LA. Last night my wife and I took a short drive to watch the fire from a closer vantage point and it was amazing. I've never seen such a massive fire up close - the flames were huge and it spanned several major hillsides.
This morning it looked like a really foggy day outside, only the fog was smoke, and everything had a bright orange glow. Ash was lightly raining down as well - I had to wipe it off of my car.
I found these pictures of the fire on Flickr. They were taken from much further away than where we are, but they give you an idea of the scope of the fire:
Hopefully nobody loses their home - apparently the fire is 0% under control. The fire is getting bigger every time I look out the window. Thankfully we're not in any danger where we are, apart from smoke inhalation.

California has so many issues. Nonetheless I hope nobody loses their home to this as well. I can only imagine how hard it is for the firefighters to "fight" fires of this size and strength.

was that in bad humor? haha, nah. My place isn't in any danger. I actually think that the whole thing is amazing; the fire is growing exponentially and there is a 4-mile high column of smoke rising into the sky that is probably 4-5 miles wide. It looks like something out of a movie. |
You know what part of the problem is? Underbrush.
They got really good at putting out forest fires and the underbrush grew and grew and now there's too much 'fuel' for the fires. I believe they've known about this issue for a while and probably even thought of ways to address the issues, but I really don't know if anything has come of it. The more you know... |
