I'm no expert at creating graphics, but I'd imagine most people use either GIMP, a free software similar to Photoshop, or Photoshop itself. You could look up some nice tutorials for either program to make a quick banner of some sort, but real graphics come from skill, which you'll need to practice at to be any good. Perhaps reading some books, or taking a class may help with that?

Photoshop is too expensive (for people with a moral objection to pirating) and GIMP is a feature-filled piece of garbage. Visit the BYOND art society and look at the links on there, they'll point you to a variety of programs that you can use for creating graphics.
Personally I recommend an older version of Paint Shop Pro. I use version 7, but I think they're probably good through version 9, until Corel bought out Jasc. At this point you can probably get it cheap on ebay if nothing else. |
I use Inkscape. I like vector art because I can resize and reshape things until they look about right.
(I also sometimes use textures from Spiral Graphics which are free for commercial use.) |
