If you've been on BYOND a week then I'd bet you've noticed the overwhelming number of anime games that look EXACTLY alike. As for the ones that don't look alike.. They still have that same feel. Now, for years now BYONDers have complained, ranting and raving about how the anime guild and all it's games are descrasing the very art-form that is amature game design. It was viewed pretty much as, "That's just how the anime guild is." HOWEVER! This little virus has grown my friends! So now instead of having just one guild sick two guilds are suffering! What is this second guild? Have ya been sleepin under a log?
It's the BYOND action guild! With the creatures of REO2(I think :D ) generously handing their source at like so, BYOND Action guild can't help but suffer.. Now, I know it seems hard to come up with a solution. How oh how could we ever quarantine this ever so rapidly spreading virus?.. Simple! Let them make their rips.. They have to learn somehow! Infact, that's how I learned myself... However, the guild's don't need to suffer too! When I made my rips WAY back when, I pretty much NEVER had a player on my server... I guess I'm just not as gifted as ripping as some of the other BYONDers.. However, that didn't stop me from learning!
So people running the guilds, why don't ya start some sort of criteria? A sort of "pattenting" system. Hub entries don't lie! So if the idividuals game is too close to anothers that already exists.. Deny them! Wait for them to finally show some destinctive features... However, I can see how one might think the root we're taking is appiling.. After all... Who doesn't want to play the same game they've been playing ran by a different owner?

Well Byond Anime has 39 games now. The plague has almost been cleansed from there.

Hmmm...BYOND's just isn't allocate material. It's almost that they don't care, the so called "Report System" is just an easy way of saying their doing their part. Your idea has flaws, since someone could make a rip and change the name completely.

Most of the REO2 rips don't get into Action too much. The guild has a few rules that dismisses most of them.

Lol, the sources of these rips are terrible. Anyone that learns from those are a plague of their own, it's extremely difficult for those in the dev. forums to convince them they're wrong.

I learned from em :(.. Alot of the things you guys want to flip over is just plain o'l stupid however you do have a good point from time to time. |
Those sources are terrible. People who learn from them get this deluded notion that just because something works, it's correct. Those same people when corrected also play the whole "there's more than one way to do things!" argument, which again is deluded.
I think I've said this before, "There is more than one way to do something: The right way and the wrong way. Each path then has multiple methods of doing things. However, when you're wrong to start off with, it doesn't matter what method you're using, it's still wrong." The things we flip over on the dev forums aren't stupid. You need to remember that you're talking to people who probably have years more experience in DM (hell, programming in general) than you, they've done everything you have and then some, and are trying to help you. You should listen to them instead of instantly denouncing them as talking BS and ignoring everything they say. When you do that, you might as well save everyone the trouble and just not post. |

I'm just saying when I make a code that has the following in it src << "<b>Hi there!" and someone wants to make a point that I didn't put a </b> then that's stupid. Reason being is BYOND obviously blocks against font colors and etc.(althoug not center if I remember correctly) not effecting other lines.. Yes, it is more "correct" to add that </b>... However, not esential enough to focus 100% of ones attention on it. |
Toby does have a point. A lot of people around here focus on the small things instead of actualy helping.

However, not esential enough to focus 100% of ones attention on it. You're right, BYOND does automatically close some HTML tags (note some, as in 'not all', therefore, it's best to be safe). But the fact of the matter is: A lot of other languages don't. Many people who start in DM go onto other languages such as PHP, C++ et-al. The habits they pick up here will be hard to break, and they will stay with them for a long time. PHP for example: In your situation, how likely are you to automatically remember to close your bold tag when echoing to the browser? Or even that long-ass argument we had with Javascript earlier on. You weren't using parameters properly by putting a space on either side of the equals sign, which is incorrect syntax, never-mind that it works, it's still incorrect. This is where you and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of other people have to learn something about programming: Working doesn't equal correct. -- Magicbeast20 wrote: Toby does have a point. That big thing is now infinitely harder to fix because the problem is located everywhere. And to add insult to injury, that problem could have been fixed from the start. |
Rips are bad.
Learning from Rips is bad. Being a lazy programmer is bad. /thread |
