I'm afraid I just have to post this - I've seen too much stuff floating around that seems to consider Christianity as being intellectually equal - or even superior - to actually looking at the real world.

So let's just look at what Christians belive, shall we? There's some sort of all-powerful, all-knowing father-figure outside the universe, who made the entire thing (Either by setting off the Big Bang and watching all the pretty colours or the old fashioned way, by hand), and then very specifically got interested in one very specific tiny blue speck in a solar system that's a tiny yellow speck in a galaxy that is, ultimately, a tiny white speck in the entire universe. On this planet, he got particularly interested in a group of ape-descended lifeforms that walked around, built things, and killed each other. So he - this omnipotent, omniscient being - decided that he wanted this particular group of creatures to worship him.

Doesn't that sound ridiculous to you? This is before we get to the whole Jesus thing, without nutso fundamentalist crap, and without bringing up any of the interesting paradoxes and contradictions within this particular faith.

How is this, in any way, a perfectly valid belief, on par with empiricism? It's just fairy-tale magic. Don't let death be the end, I want to be special.
Word.
I don't think death is the end, but I dont agree with Christiantity.
I don't think death is the end

And why? Brain activity ceases at death. If you're trying to claim that the brain isn't the seat of the mind, you're being an idiot. If you're claiming the mind is more then what's going on in the brain, you're completely unsubstantiated.
*stare*
maybe you should read up on the basic beliefs before you post things like this...

I can't really debate you about everything you mentioned in your post at the moment because I haven't actually paid attention in class/really looked into it until just recently however I will attempt to set some things straight for you for future reference ;)

Your whole "god used evolution to creatge man" thing may be what some people believe but if you look at what it requires and what The bible says then you see they just can't go together. The bible says that because of the sin of man there is death, evolution requires death in order for the "beneficial mutations" (that evolutionists say led up to modern day man) to occur. Which would mean that there was death before man, so death couldn't be the payment for sin-->christ's death would mean nothing-->no religion. So the only creation view that really makes sense for a christian is the whole "spontaneous create from nothing" thing

Yeh thats all I will say for now because its really late and I have to get up (to go to church actually heh) in a little bit.

And if you really want your facts about christianity you should check out "The case for Faith"-Lee Strobel, I am actually still reading it but it answers some of the main questions about Christians. He began writing his "case for.." series as a non christian and interviewed christian scholars with some of the main arguements used today against christ in "the case for Christ," which I have just recently finished. But yeh in the end he ends up becoming a christian..

But yeh this will probably sound like I am trying to make you read something, but i am just saying maybe you should see what its really about before you start making judgements and talking down about peoples beliefs when you haven't actually stopped to examen them properly.

And i've ended up taking way too much time typing this from when I said that 'not gonna say anymore'-thing earlier and its really early so i hope i didn't leave out too many words/throw in random words like i usually do at this time of night.
:\

(and I warn everyone...I suggest you don't go to my member page to look at who i am,etc...I have been "bombed" with a fat women dancing-video...its really gross lol)
And in response to your death is the end thing i just read:
If people really believed death is the end then there would be a rush to find out how to live forever/transfer into new bodies (thats one of those weird theories you see on news of the weird) etc. It would cause world wide panic and almost everything would be put on hold because just think about it...when you die you won't just be sitting in the earth doing nothing, you won't be able to think see, exist, its like you were never there

-sorta my views on that...but again: its late i could probably say more and in a better way but o well
Oh dearie me. We mustn't tell people the truth, because there will be a panic. It makes me feel bad, therefore it must be wrong? Come off it. Death is the end. It won't cause a worldwide panic.

maybe you should read up on the basic beliefs before you post things like this..

Ummm... why? I just presented a very brief outline of Christianity. You have a big father-figure in the sky (Not neccessarily in the sky, of course. Most of the time he/she is located outside the universe.)

Your whole "god used evolution to creatge man" thing may be what some people believe but if you look at what it requires and what The bible says then you see they just can't go together.

Which makes it even more ridiculous. Anybody living today just has to accept modern cosmology and biology, because they are most certainly correct. Evolution occured, the universe is about 10-15 billion years old, and was born in a big bang. Denying that is becoming yet more ridiculous.

evolution requires death in order for the "beneficial mutations" (that evolutionists say led up to modern day man) to occur.

1 - No. Beneficial mutations (And you really have no idea what in all hell you're talking about if you've thrown those in quotes. What's wrong with the concept of beneficial changes?) will happen whether or not something dies or not. The only reason why death is a requirement is that you need some sort of selective pressure on the population, or being 'fitter' for something is irrelevant.

no religion

Why is christianity the only viable religion? They're pretty much all equally ridiculous.

"The case for Faith"

There is none. I'm not going to bother going through that tripe - I suspect it's just going to be full of the usual theist rubbish. What caused the Big Bang, misunderstanding of evolution, the 'fine tuning' argument, and similar misuses of logic and science.

But yeh this will probably sound like I am trying to make you read something, but i am just saying maybe you should see what its really about before you start making judgements and talking down about peoples beliefs when you haven't actually stopped to examen them properly.

I have examined them properly. Hell, I used to go to church until I was about six, I've been in christian schools all my life, and my mother is a Catholic, though not a particularly devout one. You obviously don't understand my point - The entire damned religion is so silly it's laughable.
You're an [effing] dumb[butt] Jp.
I'd type up an intellectual response, but you just aren't worth it.
(You aren't worth my curses either)
Please explain how your mythology isn't as ridiculous as I've just portrayed it. Omnipotent, omniscient, father-figure in the sky that cares very particularly and specifically about an infintesmal speck in a massive universe. Sounds pretty ridiculous to me.
And why? Brain activity ceases at death.

Exactly. There's no way your 'spirit'/soul (or whatever) could carry on after death, because spirits/souls don't exist. Full stop. Bottom line. It's impossible, unless you want to start breaking the laws of science.

God knows why people believe this stuff (geddit? God knows? Hahahaha....ha).
Christianity and all variants there of should be abolished.
Such beliefs were responcible for the mass slaughter of millions of people.
If there is some kind of god, why does it, which is supposed to be all forgiving, wish people who don't believe in it, to be killed. Millions of people have been slaughterd because of this.

Infact, screw Christianity and all variants there of, Abolish religion as a whole!
Humans need to spend less time trying to impress something which may or may-not exist and more time trying to better themselves for the future. Awesome power is going in needless places. The time spent in church could better be used... painting a fence or working even.

And Artekia:
I'd type up an intellectual response, but you just aren't worth it.

To me, that just says you have no responce.

All in all, all religions sound the same when you get to the base path anyway.

God had a son Jesus.
Zeus had a son Herculies.
Jesus has awesome supernatural powers.
Herculies had awesome supernatural strength.
Both tried to spread peace through out the land etc etc.
Shit, lets go nuts, Isis had a son Horris, the hawk headed young man. Lets not forget Isis and her husban (I have forgotton his name) are not only Brother and Sister, but were married in their mothers womb. And their other Brother and Sister (I'm pretty sure the brother was named Seth) were married outside the womb. Thats two brothers and two sisters who married eachother.

Greek Goddess of the Moon Selene fell inlove with the sleeping Endymion. Asked Zeus to make him imortal, Zeus did so, and now Endymion is imortal forever sleeping. Selene had roughly 50 children with him.

I can keep going on if you want.

(I might be a bit wrong in the Egyption religions gods names. It has been a long time since I looked at it.)

Forgot to mention, Herculies and Jesus were both given birth to by human females. Though I'm not sure if Herculies mother was a supposed virgin. Wouldn't surprise me though.

Does it look like I care what your ignorant self thinks?
If I cared, I'd type up a good response.
As simple as that.
Well, I guess I care:

It's not God's fault that mankind is extremely violent. Killing is a sin. God doesn't encourage it.

Because you don't agree with it? Screw you.

Religion can be what -makes- someone be a good person, or work hard. Having strong beliefs aren't needed, but they can provide a good incentive.

Do you know how many mortal women Zeus knocked up? Downright disgusting.

Jesus has awesome supernatural powers.
Herculies had awesome supernatural strength.

Hercules really did not really try to spread peace. He went around slaying fantasy creatures, and what not.

Not much of a coincedence there... people marrying each other.

What exactly does that have to do with anything?

I can keep going on if you want.

Really? My mom was a human female too! I guess that ranks me with Hercules and Jesus. Awesome dude.
Oh, how I love the smell of trolls in the morning.
Hmm?
Think about it. This entire journal entry. I don't see anything on the main member site that would have provoked this. It comes right out of left field, talking down about it. He makes it a public entry, and allows everyone to comment.

What do you think is going to happen? :/ An intelligent conversation? You'd be hard-pressed to find THAT on Byond.
You missed the point completely Artekia.
My argument was designed to make religion look ridiculous. I did that.
Look at it in a real sense. Have you seen this god of yours? Has it spoken to you? Why does it give a damn about you?
Why is there pain and suffering?
Why do bad things happen?
If he cares so much, why do we not just start off in heaven?
If he is so forgiving, why is there a hell?

Religion also doesn't make a man good. Adof Hitler and most of the Nazi Party were Christian/Cathaloc. How do you explain the mass murder of 9 million jewish people. When Jewish people themselves belive in the same god.

If I recall right, Jewish people believe in the same god the christians do. The only thing is, they don't believe jesus was their savior. They believe their savior is yet to come.

It's not God's fault that mankind is extremely violent. Killing is a sin. God doesn't encourage it.

Is it not said he scoulpted mankind in his image?

And also, you have no right to call me ignorant. I put enough information in my post to prove I have enough knowledge on the religious topic to get by.

So you're for Incestious and Homosexual marriages?
I believe both are forbiddon in a christan faith.

Forgot to mention, Herculies and Jesus were both given birth to by human females. Though I'm not sure if Herculies mother was a supposed virgin. Wouldn't surprise me though.

Really? My mom was a human female too! I guess that ranks me with Hercules and Jesus. Awesome dude.

Is your father a god? No.
I know for a fact, if I was a god, I wouldn't waste my time with a human female...

And in theory, god would have had to either have sex with Mary (adultery) or force the child inside her womb (Rape of the womb...) both are against christian laws. Whats more, Mary didn't ask for this child.

You missed the point completely. Look at all the arguments, how possible does it all seem? Really. A goddess falling inlove with a sleeping man, and having 50 kids by him. If he's immortal, and on the planet, where is he? Why has no one found him and stuffed him in a hospital. After all, he is imortal, and nowhere does it say he assended or left the earth. It's just not possible.

If god existed, why did it give us the ability to not beleive in it?

Thats all I'm going to say on this discussion. I don't like going too deep into religous discussions. Theres always a hudge argument, because no matter what, neither side will give up. The way I see it, religious arguments are just as pointless as religion itself.
Intelligent Conversation + Religion discussion = impossible. Most of them I see end up going up to 100 comments, yet don't solve anything. :P
Hitler ordered the execution of Jews. Hitler was Catholic. Therefore, Christianity is responsible for the holocaust? I'd like to see proof of that. :/

And Luke 1:38 makes it sound like Mary agreed to this happening.
"And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her."
If you're genuinely interested in finding out how a well-educated person might not find Christianity ridiculous, G. K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy is probably your best bet. You can download it for free from Gutenberg.org.
