I'd like to point out that with an omnipotent being, everything that happens is directly its fault. If it takes 0 effort to do anything, then the only things that happen are the things it wants to happen.

I'll answer more of the christian comments later, but here's just one for now....
It's not God's fault that mankind is extremely violent. Killing is a sin. God doesn't encourage it. Oh, c'mon, god designed mankind in its entirity. He designed all of their personality traits, and arbitrarily desided which ones would be bad and good. God created sin, god created satan, god created evil, and for what? So that we could have a choice and not be robots or something? It's really a great choice if you're going to be punished for it. Hmmm I'll respond to two comments. And if you really want your facts about christianity you should check out "The case for Faith"-Lee Strobel Read parts of it. He hears a christian argument that hasn't been presented to him before and believes it. Just a few of the main arguments they refute. Like the whole burning in hell. Apparently, it's a psychological pain, not a physical one. And that the fire and brimstone thing is a metaphor. I would say that any god who would let ANYONE be in ANY kind of pain for all of eternity is wicked. But hell, that's just me. It also admits that the King James Version is poorly translated and wrong. The whole passages about god killing innocent people is supposedly not in the original hebrew texts. Hmmm, have to look into that one. It also gives some bullshit reasons why evolution is false. I'll read it over again and post later. But yeah, I think Jp might be right. The neurons in our brain are what keep us alive, not anything else. When we die, that's it, there's nothing. That's very hard to accept for most people, but as for myself, I see no problem with it. I personally choose agnosticism, so I haven't completely ruled out the possibility of god. All I see here is the two extremes fighting. Great, another 150 comment religious post. |
I guess I will post my thoughts here. I think back about 3000 years ago or whevever the first religion was created they wanted an explination for there creation. so, they thought of god. Or maybe even a crazy person thought of it in his head and started spreading these thoughts. And the story kept changing throught time until it was broken up into diffrent versions(the diffrent religions). Storys do change over time. I promise that most of the storys of jesus and god are all streched beyond its original tale. Just like the old folk tales as they were passed from person to person.
Now that I have that out of the way. I will post what I think about religion. I think that people take it to seriously. some base there whole lives off it. And many many people are killed becuase they believe it so strongly. We have spent billions on churches around the world. Even thow we arent even close to positive these people exist. But then again these beliefs keep us in line. If people didnt believe in a heaven then there is no reason to be good. There would be so many more bad people in this world. In all I think religions are stupid, All the religions believe in god(I think). The only thing that seperates then are some small little disagrements and profits. But is that really important? Isnt GOD in all the biggest picture? I find that part very stupid. This is why i think religions should be rid of. And inplace just make beliefs in GOD and thats it. This way everyone believs in God. And maybe even a better world would come out of this. |
'I think back about 3000 years ago or whevever the first religion was created '
You're aiming short. I know that hinduism was around at least 5000 years ago, and it is probably not the first religion. |
G. K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy I've just started skim-reading this, and settling down to proper reading of the more interesting passages, but it doesn't seem particularly good so far. He's already accused logic of being the cause of insanity, with no evidence, he's alleged that self-confidence is one step away from insanity, and he's argued that sin exists because you can see it (That last one may be true if you use the looser definition of sin as 'something this society finds morally abhorrent'). He needlessly attacks determinism, with what looks suspiciously like a straw man. Now he's started on materialism, and he attacks it by (I saw it coming) linking it to his long and complicated description of madness, without the slightest shred of evidence or reasoning behind it. He says he isn't attacking the truth of them, though, just whether they're healthy pursuits. And now here comes the old chestnut. Atheism destroys the humanity of men! Bloody hell, that's bad. I suppose I have to take into account when it was written. He doesn't allow the possibility of an atheist who accepts the concept of free-will, and thus sets up a false dilemma. Now comes more straw men. Straw men after more straw men. This guy really has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to materialism or atheism or philosophy. Then he states that evolution implies that there aren't any seperate types of things, because they all came from one thing and can turn into one another. That makes no sense at all. Humans can and do draw lines on many a spectrum, they can do it here. He then manages to argue that because ignorance exists, scientists are all ridiculous when they talk about 'laws' I've gone on a bit from there, but the entire thing seems to be the philosophy of a religious man who doesn't understand anything that isn't religion. He really doesn't seem to have anything good to say. |
You should write a book refuting Orthodoxy (you could call it Heterodoxy, though Unorthodoxy might be a more marketable title). I'd buy a copy!
|
It might be a little late. From what I've read (about half of it), this guy was around a fair while ago, and a lot of the arguments he uses would be recognised as illogical by anyone that would buy that sort of book.

Listin, Why do oyu beleive geo..It's all abotu the past, abotu chrisopher comlumbus and shit.. Why cant you beleive god, but yo ucan beleive the past of someone youh ave never met but heard storys of...It's the exact same thing. Why nto beleive in god and do what he says. If it's true, and the judgement day comes, your gone to hell because you did not beleive of worhsip him. He put us on earth for a reason, which was to worship him
|
Ummmm... No?
I think you'll find that most of the details of Christopher Columbus' voyage were corrobated with a fair number of people, and the basic details - he went to America and came back - sort of fit in with several other facts we know of. Accepting the basic details of the Christopher Columbus story is nowhere near the same as accepting the existance of an invisible, unknowable, omnipotent, transcendant, omniscient, omnibenevolent being. If it's true, and the judgement day comes, your gone to hell because you did not beleive of worhsip him. He put us on earth for a reason, which was to worship > him I'm willing to take that 'risk'. |
I think of it like this:
If christianity turns out to be right ( fat chance ) then I would rather go to hell. Why? Better then spending in heaven with the same asshole who would send people to hell in the first place. Heaven for the climate, hell for the company. POKER WILL KICK ASS |
Dip, I think you should concentrate on not making so many typos. God doesn't want an illiterate in his perfect kingdom, now does he?
|
Now that's just out of line. Don't drag Grammar Nazism into an argument. That can make anyone not worth listening to.
|
Argument? That implies that i'm being serious.
Well in a way, I am, but not 100% Edit: oh and by the way Sarm, about your picture no.... just NO |
Im not sure if this is true or not... but i heard that in the bible it says the earth was created in 24 hours, and that the first life on earth was 4000 years ago. Which means that it is saying there was never dinosours, or all those other animals. Now we all know that there has been life on this planet for well over 4000 years. So... i dont see how you could listen to the bible if it has something like that in it.
|
Heaven for the climate, hell for the company.
Yeah, because there's a very good chance the numbers in hell far outnumber the ones of heaven. Since doing ANYTHING is a sin pretty much, some religion. So many contradictions that it's impossible to buy it. |
Im not sure if this is true or not... Then why use it in your argument? Go look it up. I don't recall reading anywhere in the Bible that stated the earth was only 4000 years old. The Bible is a religious text, not a science book, so don't treat it as one. I also don't think every inch of it is supposed to be taken literally, either. Yeah, you can point out in Genesis that the earth was created in 6 days but I think that part was to make a point of taking time off to rest. |
"And in theory, god would have had to either have sex with Mary (adultery) or force the child inside her womb (Rape of the womb...) both are against christian laws. Whats more, Mary didn't ask for this child."
Uhhh.....An angel came down an asked her is she consented, which Mary did. Doesn't exactly define rape, does it? |
DipSetxXx:
I'm sorry but you have no place to talk on this side of the arguement. Also, Knifo, Based on genealogical record In the Bible it seems more likely it was created appr. 6000 BC. A bit more than 4000 years ago. Also, do we have any proof of dinosaurs that someone like me couldn't argue with? Finally, Nadrew, point out a few contradictions, and I'll see what I can do =) |
