As I've been feeling pretty under the weather for a couple months now, a good portion of my time has been spent vegging out playing games.
Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires
Pretty much what you'd expect, although it probably should have been called "Dynasty Warriors 6: Officers". Most of the gameplay is focused around being an officer instead of a ruler. Much to the game's detriment, they've seriously scaled back the strategy elements from DW5:E. Meh.
Battlefield 1943
Most of the release day server issues have been resolved, so if you are into FPS games at all then you need to give the demo a whirl. I'm loving every minute of this... incredibly simple design backed up with deep gameplay.
Dragon Quest 4 (DS)
I want to track down the English Translation team for this game and STAB THEM. Seriously. First of all, you don't write out accents phonetically. Second, you don't just randomly add "culture" to a remake of a classic game just for the hell of it. Satan himself must have translated this otherwise perfect game.
I've been dying for a good strategy game to play lately. I may default back to Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2 for NES (my favorite strategy game of all time)... but if anyone has any suggestions for a strategy game that isn't overly complex/hard to get into then let me know!
Battlefield 1943 is a $15 download, is the demo really necessary?
I'm a fan of the BF series, but I'm waiting patiently on my PC for Battlefield 3. Or possibly Bad Company 2, which comes out a bit sooner. |

Didn't the original NES version of Dragon Quest 4 have that weird accent writting as well? Nope. Thankfully, Dragon Warrior 4 for NES wasn't translated by idiots. Fugsnarf wrote: My strategy game suggestion is more of an RPG than an overall strategy game, but it's Bahamut Lagoon for SNES. Thanks for the recommendation -- I've heard of it before, but based on your description I think I'll give it a whirl. Kaiochao wrote: Battlefield 1943 is a $15 download, is the demo really necessary? People on BYOND beg for PayPal donations to feed themselves and rely upon misguided ass clowns to buy them gift memberships... I just assumed that the concept of actually paying money for something was out of most BYONDer's realm of comprehension :) However, I agree. At $15 Battlefield 1943 is a steal. Every Xbox 360 owner should get it! |
I remember several years ago right after Square and Enix merged, Dragon Quest 8 came out with a travesty of a translation. Yet when I griped about it on the Silkgames forums of all places, this large group of "slimeknight" fanboys came out of the wood works to bitch me out for being too much of a purist.
Now they spell out written accents phonetically in a game that was never intended to be regional in a real world sense. Top that off with the initial shitty names and spell translations, and I think I win for seeing this shit-storm coming years ago. The Square-Enix team has transcended stupidity to pure childishness. |

I'm currently in the process of downloading Battlefield 1943(figured it'd be best to wait a few days considering the initial server issues), and judging from what people have been saying, it sounds quite awesome. Look me up some time, if you get the chance!
I also have to agree with you on the horrendous translation for the DS version of DW4. After a very short while, it became far more entertaining to simply speed through conversations without reading them and make up my own dialogue as I went along. |

Haha... anything is preferable to wading through the text in that game as-is. |
I've been playing Dragon Quest 5 on and off since it was released (I'm almost done), and it does indeed seem to continue the tradition of stupid accents. Although mostly revolved around a character named Pedro who speaks in a Spanish accent. Seriously Squeenix?
As for strategy games, I personally like the Advance Wars games if you haven't given them a try yet. The writing and some of the characters in the game may get on your nerves, but it's still a very fun, yet simple game. |

I'm waiting on my 320GB hdd to arrive for my PS3 before I purchase BF1943, but I did play the demo. It felt a lot like battlefield, but a bit of a lack of action. I'll blame this on it being day one for the game, but I finished with twice as many points as anyone else on the server, yet our team lost. That's battlefield for you.
I'm really looking forward to BF3. Despite Dice's long track record of extremely buggy games, I just can't help but from love their games. |
My strategy game suggestion is more of an RPG than an overall strategy game, but it's Bahamut Lagoon for SNES. The strategy part is the battling and wars you take part in. You set up different teams and they all go out on the battle field to either take back a country lost to the empire, fight the empire in general, or even just raid a dungeon of some kind. The wars play alot like a game such as Final Fantasy Tactics where you move certain tiles in a turn. The difference is that you go into a turn based battle mode when you choose to fight enemies. It's a great game, great storyline. I love it at least. I don't know if it's the "strategy" game that you're looking for though.
