Hey all, I just installed wine and am currently getting my robust on in SS13, just wanted to lay down a quick up to date tutorial. This is by no means the definitive tutorial, but is perfect for Ubuntu 10.04 users and will hopefully light the way for others.
I've figured this out based on snippets of advice found throughout this forum, so thanks to everyone for such a great community.
Be warned, this will require a little bit of command line usage.
-------- START HOWTO
First, install wine. I use the version supplied by the default repos, which is currently 1.2.2, and is installed by the command
sudo apt-get install wine
then I get winetricks and use it to retrieve the necessary dlls. Use the following two commands:
wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks mfc42 vcrun6 wsh56
keep in mind that this download winetricks as a script in your home directory, you can safely move/remove that file now that you're done with it.
Then I download the BYOND windows client, today it's at version 487.1096. I install it as you normally would on Windows.
Keep in mind, you may encounter a few errors and a few false starts, but give it a few tries and it should eventually work quite well.
---------- END HOWTO
My only problem is that the notification bubble tends to pop up halfways off-screen, and the animation is a bit slow, if anyone has a fix for that please post it.

I got ss13 working just fine today, weirdly enough.
I installed mcf42, and wsh56, using playonlinux's application options, vc6 was probably installed automatically, because it installed vc first.
I ran gibbed 3, and game screen with no errors.

click the ubuntu package (not debian, though it could work, the ubuntu button has ubuntu specific instructions for natty.
