Well I'm not sure if this is the best place on the forum to post this, but I've recently been seeking knowledge in Linux, though have no idea where to start, so can someone please direct me to a suitable area to learn?

What exactly do you want to do, and learn?

Well I'm looking into exploits and gaining root access, using ftstab.

As fstab should on any competent system be secured with 0644 access with root:root, you aren't going to get in that way. Nor does that even make sense as a means of gaining root access, unless you intend to force an unsafe umask on the file-system storing /etc/passwd?

I'm not entirely sure what you meant, but to clear up a bit of what we're talking about...
I'm looking into iPhone jailbreaking, I've done a bit of research to find out that iPhone jailbreaking includes editing fstab in order to gain root access over the entire filesystem. Other than that, I'm also looking into finding sofware exploits, mainly for the iOS, for which I was directed to IDA which never really made any sense. Hope this clears a bit up and hopefully you get what I'm looking for. |

You ... don't gain root access over the entire file-system, you just break out of your translated jail, thus you are no longer sandboxed in your own little file-system, but access the full iPhone file-system tree.

I believe you do gain root access on the device, as you can su(do) stuff from a terminal emulator...maybe I'm wrong, but that was my thought. About learning about exploits, I don't think this is the place, as that pertains to Hacking...I thought BYOND had a policy on that? I am a Reverse Engineer and do exploit development, but I wouldn't ask about that on here. :P EDIT: Didn't see the date, sorry. :/ |
