Contact lenses, that is!

About a month ago, I suddenly noticed I couldn't read stuff that was far away anymore. I let it go though, thinking I was just tired and/or stressed. When it didn't stop, I made an appointment at the local eye doctor, which I had today.

Turns out that my vision had went from 20/20 to 20/50 in one eye and 20/60 in the other! It seemed like it happened over the course of a day or so, and the doctor said that it's not unlikely that it did. He said it's very common for juveniles to have a loss of vision in the short period of 48 to 72 hours, due to a growth spurt!

Turns out I'm near-sighted. Here's something interesting he told me; people that are near-sighted tend to have an over-developed cerebral cortex, though they're not sure why. Apparently near sighted people tend to be more intelligent than people with normal vision or people who are far sighted.

Another interesting statistic is that the majority of people in prison are far sighted!

Here's something else that everyone should know; the doctor said that you really shouldn't wear those color contact lenses for sight, they're really dangerous. The clear part of the lense in which your pupil is supposed to show is only 5mm big -- to give you an idea, my pupil was 5mm big when he was shining a light at it! He said if I were to wear those at night, where my pupil would enlarge, that my vision would become hazy, and I'd start seeing glares in lights. He said they should be taken off the market.

Hope all of this teaches you something!
Sorry about your sudden impairment!

Your remarks (well, the doctor's remarks) about the pupil size in those colored contacts were interesting. I'd think it'd be better to have a larger pupil in those, but maybe the pupils are clear enough that the real eye color shows through and creates an offputting effect. (Me, I don't see much use for the things anyway -- I've known a few women with perfectly attractive brown eyes who looked scary when they went to blue or green eyes -- though if people want to spend their money on something that makes them look worse, more power to 'em.)

Larger pupils are generally more attractive to others, too -- there was an example of this in an old psychology textbook. Two apparently identical pictures side by side, and you had to pick which one looked more likable, or sympathetic, or something. Most people would choose the one where the pupils had been slightly enlarged.
I learned something! Thanks! =)

I didn't know that people could become near-sighted so quickly -- sorry about that.

I'm near-sighted too, but I've been near-sighted ever since kindergarten.

I have glasses, but someday, I'll probably get contacts. Knowing about the colored ones is interesting, but I don't think I'd want them even if they weren't dangerous.
don't feel bad. My vision is 70/50.
I don't get how you say it could be 70/50. That should be a GOOD thing. 20/20 means that something at 20 feet, looks like it's at 20 feet. I had 20/50, so something at 20 feet, my eyes looked at it as though it were 50 feet away. If you had 70/50, it'd mean you had really good eyesight. :P
Meh, My mistake that I caught. I think i ment 20/70 in one eye and 20/50 in the other.
Ah. Just a bit worse than mine in one eye. My left eye is 20/60 and my right eye is 20/50.
Mine is from all these years staring at the computer screen. I recently got an LCD screen however because I was told they don't mess up your eyes as fast.
*sniff* I wanted purple contacts just to change my eye color. Now, with my green eyes, a Chinese ghost might marry and sacrifice me to manifest.

Don't worry, a truck driver will save you in the nick of time.
Wow... I didn't realise eyesight could change so quickly!

I've had glasses since I was 6, and contacts since... uh, just over a month ago. Contacts are great while you're wearing them, but they're annoying to put on and take off and maintain. Especially as I only have temporary ones (if I wear them for more than 6 hours a day, my eyes get tired).

I didn't know that about the colour lenses, though I had wondered how they accounted for changes in pupil size. Evidently they don't. =P
You all have rubbishy eyes...mine aren't bad...well...sort of. ;)

Recently it's hurt to look at things, but only because I ruined my eyes on my monitor playing Freelancer.

I wonder how you know...I mean, I might be near or far sighted...but...I dunno. I couldn't compare, never done a test.
Mine aren't bad at all =P

Though, for a few days I was on spring vacation, when my right eye went bad for about a week.
I was just reading the menu at Quizno's, and suddenly, my eye went blurry. It didn't go away until a few days later. That was so annoying :S
Yeah, once a few years back I found it impossible to look at my green simpsons pencil case. It was weird.

(And Voltay...why have you not added me to your friends list?
What? Sure I'm your friend. >_>)
Hmmmm.....
I need to wear glasses probably, but I don't. As long as I can see to do everyday things, I don't care.
Interesting note about the color contacts. I had actually been planning on getting them, but then I decided I like my brown eyes. =)
Messed up eyes appear to be hereditary in my family, so I wouldn't be surprised if in just a few years my eyes went out of wack.
All my family close family have blue eyes...I get my green eyes from my great grandfather, who flew fighter planes for the Germans in one of the World Wars (I forget which, probably II, but I dunno).

:( I wanted to have blue eyes and blonde hair...die Fuhrer doesn't love me :(
Heh, I have blue eyes and blonde hair. I got them from my dad's side, most of my mom's side has green eyes. I'm also near sight, as is most of my dad's side of the family, my great grandma was even a math genious. =)

My grandpa on my mom's side worked for the U.S. military on ships during WWII. =)
