*slaps his forehead*
The snooka: Manga is NOT animation. Manga is a....I don't know a better way to describe it, but a comic book, written backwards, without superheroes. Well, even if its not entirely accurate, it gives a gerneral idea. If you want a history of manga, go here Tactics:Jungle Book is not anime nor manga, it is, quite simply, a cartoon. Here is an article on anime. |
Unfortunately you can't define Anime as not being animation. It is animation. But, it's a sub-genre of animation that's drawn in a perticular style. I used to like anime/manga due to the value placed on storytelling and the utalitarian style of art. With the new wave of Anime/Manga fans watching Americanised shows this balance is shifting towards the animation and many popular modern shows simply suck. There's the carbon-copy cliched story and the cloned animation 'Otaku' drool over. The point of Anime/Manga (for me) is to be Unique, make your own style and enjoy the large variety of expression and thoughts that the genre hosts. This isn't true anymore.

0.0 ok, well i went wrong on the manga, there was too much shonen jump in my head, litterally, ther was a shonen jump book on my head. XD . and i just got word that pokemon is an anime... i REALLY need to get my facts strait. but for now i wait for another response.

Thorg: I never said Anime wasn't animation. I said Manga wasn't. Read my post better :P
However, I do agree with you on the fact that Anime is changing, and in many cases becoming worse. I mean, just watch some of the commercials on Adult Swim. Paranoia Angel-boy with the golden bat? Come on. Actually, I'm not sure if I got the name 100% correct, but its still stupid either way. However, there are still some good ones out there. |
The definition of anime is animation, meaning ALL animation, just as Manga means comic.
An show doesn't have to be Japanese to be anime. And James, I have to disagree with the issue of anime getting worse. In the last couple years they've come out with Paranoia Agent(Actually quite good), Naruto, s.CRY.ed, Haibane Renmei, Samurai Champloo, and countless others, all high quality anime. True, they may not stack up to the classics like Evangelion, but they are great anime regardless. |
did anyone see paranoia agent on satuday june 11th? uichi finally got hit by little slugger to prove him inoccent. and miss chona got hit to . and this guy proposed to her and theyre gonna get married, but miss chona cant quit her job( as a hooker ) it was the best 1

I thought Manga meant 'bizzare' or 'unreal' but then again that's second hand information. Apologies for ranting on after misreading. As for anime/manga getting better. Again, it's a matter of opinion. Hmm, I haven't answered the question of the post yet. Well, i'm very quiet about my interests but the Manga 'Planetes' is a fave of mine.

Well let me start! Anime definition is animation as my vietnamese freind said " I don't care how you say it anime or cartoon is the same ". So I guess anime stands for animation. Manga hmmm I took out my 'how to draw manga' book and I read this "What is manga? It means to sketch the image in your mind". Well to answer the forum, my favorite anime is tsubasa chronicles.

Paranoia Agent was that show I was talking about when I said Paranoia Angel, and it still sucks either way. I watced it, and I have to disagree about it being 'high quality anime'...
As time moves on, all the new anime becomes nothing but plot-copies of old anime. I can't remember what its called, but probably one of the few new animes that are actually good is that one about Altars. When something is called Anime, it generally refers to the Japanese style of Animation. And Thorg, your answer about Manga actually is correct, in a sense. That was how the original Manga came to be, but it has changed over the years. Manga does not mean 'comic' You cannot call Fantastic 4 or some other bullshit like that 'Manga' because the two are different, just like you cannot call Spongebob Anime. Dumbass. Jesus, just read the wikipedia articles on it, look it up in the dictionary, and go to dictionary.com if you must! I have all sorts of references behid my statement, and you have presented none Gordon. Either present something substatial, or withdraw your arguement. |
James, let me guess, all your references are American?
Funny, considering anime is not an American word. The word anime was created by the French with the meaning of animation. It was later adopted by the Japanese, whom had stopped making their own words long before, and was given the same meaning. It did not get the meaning Japanese animation until ignorant Americans decided to adopt the word and give it a false, slang definition. As for manga(Again, not an American word so you shouldn't use an American slang for it), I have multiple Japanese-English dictionaries that say it means comic, as well as Japanese speaking friends and family. If you want references, ask anyone reliable who knows Japanese or French, they can tell you the same thing, or look in a Japanese-English or French-English dictionary. |
Heh, Americans are very bad about assuming that the way they use a term is definitive. Even when told otherwise by native speakers. In general usage in the US, anime refers to Asian animated productions while Manga refers to the print stuff, usually illustrated booklets. Disney productions aren't generally considered anime (though Disney has had a tremendous influence on Japanese animation) because of its domestic roots.
How can you say the quality of anime is decreasing? Just like any media, good and bad products are constantly being produced. Good recent animes that spring to mind are Witch Hunter Robin and Full Metal Alchemist. Other favorites that are older include Ninja Scroll (minus exactly 3 scenes, anybody who has seen it can probably guess them), Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop, and Record of Lodoss War. My girlfriend preferred Chobits and Ah My Goddess. We both thought Revolutionary Girl Utena was *highly* overrated. I felt that Evangelion and Gundam Wing were also overrated, but I am not a big fan of the giant robot genre so meh (though I do like the original Robotech and Macross). And Fist of the North Star was dirty ass ;-P |
