I don't have one of these posts on my blog yet, so I figured I'd better go with the trend. ;-)

This is copied from a comments page on Kunark's blog. It's a little out of context here, but I'd like to see what people think of my reasoning:

------

Let me also clear up your claim that $6,000 is "a lot of money" in this context.

(I'm assuming that your figures are correct. This is a big assumption, but I'm willing to argue this on your figures.)

FACT: $6,000 a year is NOTHING. One person can't live on $6,000 a year.

FACT: Devoting more time to BYOND will reduce the time that the folks at Dantom can devote to their existing jobs.

FACT: Therefore, they will take a pay cut.

FACT: Therefore, they need to make up for lost income from their new "job" (working on BYOND).

FACT: That income has to come from somewhere. Enter "BYOND Members".

FACT: If they devote one third of their time to working on BYOND (a reasonable assumption I think), they will lose one third of the income from their other job. I don't know how much they make, but I'm certain that it'd be more than 3*$6,000 = $18,000. They are programmers, after all; programmers tend to have decent incomes.

THEREFORE: Dantom will be taking a pay cut, not a pay increase.
Well, I guess it's better than getting nothing at all. ;)
Usually this is discussed among board members in terms of upkeep first, payoff second. Nobody really expects to make money off this in the near term, but the goal is to at least be able to keep up the BYOND servers. Server maintenance, ISP costs, etc. are as you can imagine considerable for a site this size. $6,000 a year might well be enough to cover that and more; I'm not sure. But definitely not all of that will make it to Tom or the staff.
Yeah, I can't see anyone making too much profit from it yet.
