While watching one of my favourite movies last night, it occurred to me that the genre of movie I generally stick to is comedy and mostly in a parody sense. Occasionally stepping outside for Science Fiction and Adventure. (This is of course excluding animated movies.)
So in no particular order, I wrote down the movies I can watch over and over again, and still laugh.
--
Down Periscope (1996) Comedy.
The acting in this movie is fantastic and the jokes will stay with me for a long, long time.
Admiral Winslow: Aw damn it to hell don't go by the book! Think like a pirate! I want a man with a tattoo on his dick, do I have the right man?
Tom Dodge: By a strange coincidence you do sir.
--
Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995) Comedy.
If there was ever a better take on a Dracula movie, I haven't found it. Mel Brooks has always been one of my favourite comedy writers/directors/actors. This movie is the reason why.
Jonathan Harker: She's alive?
Van Helsing: She's Nosferatu.
Jonathan Harker: She's Italian?
--
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) Comedy.
Once again, Mel Brooks has worked his magic and won me over with another fantastic take on an old classic.
Prince John: And why should the people listen to you?
Robin Hood: Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.
--
Loaded Weapon 1 (1993) Comedy.
One of Samuel L. Jackson's first movies (if not his first, I don't know). This is a fantastic take on several big time movies including Lethal Weapon (Obviously) and Die Hard. With several cameos by many people from Popeye to Mr. Potato head.
General Morters: Where's the microfilm, Mike?
Mike McCracken: I don't know, I gave it to York. I thought she was one of your men.
General Morters: Act in haste, repent in leisure.
Mike McCracken: But he who hesitates is lost.
General Morters: Never judge a book by its cover.
Mike McCracken: What you see is what you get.
General Morters: Loose lips, sink ships...
Mike McCracken: Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing or fighting, my friend.
General Morters: ...Sorry Mike, no good.
--
Flying High (1980) Comedy.
Leslie Nielsen is a comedic genius, nothing more really needs to be said about that one.
Hanging Lady: Nervous?
Ted Striker: Yes.
Hanging Lady: First time?
Ted Striker: No, I've been nervous lots of times.
--
Hot Fuzz (2007) Action/Comedy.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost make a fantastic duo on screen. Regardless of their roles, they always seem to do an absolutely fantastic job. I fell in love with this movie from the preview, and it lived up to every one of my expectations and more.
DS Andy Wainwright: You do know there are more guns in the country than there are in the city.
DS Andy Cartwright: Everyone and their mums is packin' round here!
Nicholas Angel: Like who?
DS Andy Wainwright: Farmers.
Nicholas Angel: Who else?
DS Andy Cartwright: Farmers' mums.
--
Shaun of the Dead (2004) Comedy.
Same as Hot Fuzz. I saw the trailer for this on Dawn of the Dead IIRC. This movie also lived up to my every expectation.
Dianne: I don't think he'd leave us, Davs.
David: Wouldn't he? Lizzy, how can you put your faith in a man you spectacularly binned for being unreliable? A man whose idea of a romantic nightspot and an impenetrable fortress are the same thing? It's... This is a pub! We are in a pub! What are we going to do?
--
Run Fatboy Run (2007) Comedy.
Simon Pegg is a fantastic actor. And somewhere deep inside my dark and evil heart, is a place for the occasional love story. This is one of those situations.
Gordon: Go on then, run!
Dennis: Isn't there some kind of like... special technique?
Gordon: Well... yeah... you put one leg in front of the other over and over again really really fast.
--
Keeping Mum (2005) Comedy.
Another movie I just adore. Rowan Atkinson is another brilliant actor. (Not to mention that fine actress who plays his daughter)
Gloria Goodfellow: You can't just go 'round killing people just because you don't approve of them!
Grace Hawkins: You know, that's what my doctors used to say. It was the one point we could never agree on.
--
Office Space (1999) Comedy.
You know, for a guy who gets promotions for deliberately sabotaging his job, he is certainly ungrateful.
Bob Slydell: You see, what we're actually trying to do here is, we're trying to get a feel for how people spend their day at work... so, if you would, would you walk us through a typical day, for you?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah.
Bob Slydell: Great.
Peter Gibbons: Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour.
Bob Porter: Da-uh? Space out?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.
--
Clerks (1994) Comedy.
When I was working in retail, this was about my attitude to it as well. I think my brother said it best when he said "Customers are the disease of retail employment". Seriously.
Dante Hicks: Someone jammed gum in the locks.
Veronica Loughran: You're kidding.
Dante Hicks: Bunch of savages in this town.
--
Clerks II (2004) Comedy.
Same as the above, only twice as colourful (you can take that as the movie is actually in colour, or there is more swearing in it. Either way, I'm not apologising for the pun.)
Randal Graves: You swung at me!
Dante Hicks: You ducked.
Randal Graves: Because you swung at me!
--
Dogma (1999) Comedy.
What can I say? Kevin Smith is also a comedic genius. I go out of my way to see as many of his movies as I can.
Bethany: What's he like?
Metatron: God? Lonely. But funny. He's got a great sense of humor. Take sex for example. There's nothing funnier than the ridiculous faces you people make mid-coitus.
Bethany: Sex is a joke in heaven?
Metatron: The way I understand it, it's mostly a joke down here, too.

If you haven't seen any of the above, I recommend looking out for them (if you're a comedy fan). You wont be disappointed.
There are undoubtly others I've missed, but it's very cold and I can't think very well when my feet are trailing for the ice-block Olympics.
Waterboy, Joe Dirt, and allot of Tiberath's list were good. Haven't seen a small handful of them however.
I'd probably nominate "Happy Gilmore", and "Me, Myself, and Irene" as a couple of my favorites. Almost forgot to switch back to my personal key there. |
My favorite movie has to got to be Momento. I love watching comedies, but they hardly ever make enough of an impression on me to be in my favorites list.
|
I was just listing my favorite comedy movies. If I had to pick an absolute favorite, It'd probably be Rush Hour or Friday or something like that. There's several action movies that come close though, pretty much anything with keanu reeves is good. (Matrix, Constantine are big ones) Wanted, Scarface, several movies with Morgan Freeman. The Last Samurai, The Patriot,Boondock Saints, etc..My list is about 100+ movies long, I probably couldn't pick a favorite action movie.
|
I'm all for clerks and dogma though.
My favorite comedys, in no particular order:
Dumb and Dumber
Waterboy
Superbad
Deuce Bigalow: European Gigalo
Rush Hour
Joe Dirt
Friday
Money Talks
I could go on and on..Almost anything with Chris Tucker, happy madison, Seth Rogen, or jim carrey is good.
