Hello.
Okay, so I have a problem that seems to only occur when I'm in games on BYOND. Usually, when I click something in-game that pops up(such as a map for the game, a picture, etc.), it doesn't come up and I get this message:
Security alert
Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded.
I've tried googling the problem, and it says I should be be able to turn messages off in my security options, but the "Internet security settings" for security messages options is grayed out, and I can't turn it off.
I use Windows 7.
Please help, thank you.

Thank you for the reply, Higoten.
I followed the guide and created an Administrator account on my computer, and I logged on it. I tried to change the settings, but all the same problems were still occuring. The security message options were still greyed out. Also, when I tried turning on Windows Security Center Service, I got this message: The Windows Security Center can't be started. I also tried hitting the "use recommended settings" button for my firewall, but then I get this message: Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424 Could it be that I can't change it because I've already made other changes on my router to get through the firewall? |
I don't think that any changes you made to your router should affect the security settings of the windows firewall.
However, if the Windows Security Center can't be started, i fear that adware/spyware/malware may be at play here. You should run some scans on your computer (I recommend downloading Malware Bytes and running a scan using it. Malware bytes is a very good and free scanner. If you aren't already using a generic virus scanner, I've been pretty happy using Windows Security Essentials. ) After you have run a scan for malware and viruses. You may have to manually enable the Security Center, This article goes though extensive steps for enabling the security center. |
Ok, so I ran a quick scan on Malware Bytes, and 3 objects were found. I removed them and it asked me to reboot my computer, so I did. I came back on and tried to uncheck the security message options, but they were still grayed out. I logged off and logged back onto my Administrator accont again, but the options were grayed out there still.
Should I try doing a full scan on Malware Bytes to see if it picks anything else up? |
Yeah, you should always run a full scan anytime that you suspect that you have a virus. A quick scan is really just for typical maintenance when you don't suspect anything is really wrong.
Again, you may have to manually enable Windows Security Center if a virus disabled it. This article may be able to help with that. Why in the world microsoft would make it so that an administrator would be unable to configure security settings is beyond me. |
I looked at the article, and opened Services. However, I wasn't able to find anything in the list called Security Center(I also looked for Windows Security Center and WSCSVC, but they weren't on the Services list, either.)
Is there maybe a different name for it on the list? Also, I've just started the full scan on Malware Bytes. |
That's very strange that the security center didn't appear in the services list.
If you still don't have any luck after malware bytes finishes, It looks like the issue here may be a registry value. Follow the steps here on how to remove the registry value that determines IE's security settings. Hope this helps! |
It could be possible that the services have stopped..
Best thing to do is startbutton - run and type in services.msc a new window will pop up and have a pretty large list of "services" which you can start/stop/restart .. I suggest sorting by name and looking at all the Windows entries - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/ itprovistasecurity/thread/ c3e600fc-d3d7-4d8a-9bc4-c1eb0398664c/ Try some of these [edit] if RUN isn't in the start menu you can do the following - if your keyboard has the windows start button icon (in between ALT and CTRL ... press that button along with the letter - r --- .. |
To Higoten:
I'm already able to use the "Custom level" button in the Security tab on Internet Options, and I already have it set at Medium-High. To A.T.H.K: My problem is that I don't have Security Center on my list on Services. It doesn't show up on there. I'll look more into the links you posted though, thanks. :) |
Hi Chidori309
The service is named just *Security Center* without the * hopefully that helps you find it. You may also what to check this out - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/ windows_7-windows_update/ security-center-under-services-local-not-found/ a78855d7-0061-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5 It lists a few Windows updates that may help. |
To A.T.H.K:
Security Center doesn't show up at all in Services. It's not on the list. I checked out the link you gave me, and it said to try starting Security Center in Command Prompt, and I get to the step where it tells you to type this in: net start wscsvc However, when I enter net start wscsvc into Command Prompt, I get this message after it: The service name is invalid. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2185. I type NET HELPMSG 2185 in and I get this message: The service name is invalid. |
I see.. very odd..
Just a random stupid question! but are you sure you are on Windows 7? |
Darn.
If netstart is unable to find the service, then it is possible that the registry key was deleted or corrupted. This post has the registry key for wscsvc second post from the last. If you have a recovery disk for Windows 7 (I don't think they come standard with a OEM computer anymore) You may be able to use it to run a "repair" and that may correct the value. However, if it doesn't you may have to do it manually. |
Could you explain how to create the registry key?
I went to Registry Editor, and I tried Edit >> New >> Key, but I got this message: Cannot create key: Error writing to the registry. |

However, if it doesn't you may have to do it manually. Typically they create a recovery partition with similar features. I think for most Dell machines it can be accessed by pressing F8 during boot. However, if a virus was able to disable all of his security (or even if it was something else), I would assume further problems lie ahead. Personally, I would just start from scratch and do a fresh install (should also be accessible from a recovery partition). Also, I find Avast's boot-time scan to be pretty good at finding entrenched viruses, but I haven't used Malware Bytes so I can't really compare them. |
It sounds like your running into a permissions issue again, you will have to use the hidden administrator account.
It may also be easier to download a copy of the correct wscsvc registry value. Here is a copy of it. If you have a 32 bit operating system, download the one that says wscsvc. If you have a 64 bit operating system, download the one that says wscsvc(64). Once you have downloaded it, unzip it and double click it. it should then prompt you if you want to add the key to the registry. After it has done so, reboot your computer and see if you can start the service. |
Finally!
I got the wscsvc registry key downloaded, and I restarted. I went into Services and started Security Center. I went onto the "Security message" options and it was no longer grayed out. I unchecked "Internet security settings", tested to make sure my problem was solved in-game, and it worked. The security alerts no longer show up. Thank you! :) |

Are you an administrator on your computer? If you are not, then becoming an administrator on your computer should allow you to change these settings and turn off those annoying and unnecessary security settings.
If you are an administrator on your computer, but still can't access those settings, then your computer may have additional security features on it, and you will have to use the hidden administrator account to make those changes. Check out this link here for more information and step by step guide to enabling the master administrator account (Option 1 appears to be the easiest method of doing so.
Good luck!
