Okay, so, have you ever played Yet Another Generic Space-Age Conquest Game, by the man Crispy- but wished it had a souped up, ultra-high-tech lasery HUD and super ace graphics?
No?
Well tough luck, because I was thinking how cool it would be to have flash and BYOND integrated while I was in the shower.
BYOND uses DM. DM can write and read text files.
Flash uses AS. AS can write and read text files.
So I was thinking, how would it work out?
It'd be pretty much easy if you had someone like digi running a server with the flash onboard. Players at home would then start up the game, AND click on a link and run the flash game in their browsers.
They could then interact with their nice space strategy game through Dream Seeker, and have the game write the changes to a text file.
The Flash program would then read from the text file and then update itself with it's hyper cool speed and smooth powerfulness.
It wouldn't be so great with action games, with the switching and stuff- but with turn based, slower paced games it'd absolutely ROCK.
I have to admit, I'm not terribly great with DM. Sure, I can do most things I want...but I haven't wrote very complex DM for ages...or at all...I'm not that talented with it.
I'm competent with ActionScript however...so maybe me and Thorg of Team Sea Slug will try see what we could do with Flash and BYOND integration. If it's even possible, which I don't see why not.
(also, think of the other possibilities. Pretty and smooth and cool leader boards that read off text files made by the BYOND game...cool animated login screens...the possibilities are quite large in number!)
I hope this got you thinking. If it didn't, then just try harder! :p
Clicky for a VERY poor mock up of BYOND flash integration. Sorry to pick on your game again Crispy...it's just so adequate...tell me and I'll remove the picture straight away if you want. And then burn it. <_<
/me out, I have two exams tomorrow. Me and Thorgy will do some pretty cool things over the summer, DM wise. I can just hope flash could be a part of that somehow!
*edit*
Thinking maybe people might get annoyed having to switch from the DS to the browser and back, etc. Well, you could always use the browser contained in the DS- which would, pardon the pun relating to the new Nintendo console, be a rather double screened experience.
*double edit*
Well I just checked my Dream Seeker...and I realised the game windows and browser windows are RIGHT NEXT to eachother! That would be GREAT! Straight from BYOND to Flash, on the same screen!
Oh wow! :)
*end double edit*
Also, if you had the BYOND game reading and writing the text files, and Flash reading and writing the text files, then players would never have to look at their DS's while playing the game!
They could play through the browser, while the BYOND game works silently sending messages and so on.
Although this kind of ruins the whole reason BYOND is involved, since you could just have eachothers flash writing to the text files.
Unless it didn't like having access or something...but that can be overridden...I dunno.
I just dunno. :p You guys post comments if you come up with any ideas/criticism/suggestions, etc.
*triple edit*
I mean, c'mon!
Think how good this would be!
You could have BYOND games having much bigger worlds and so on- with resources being shared out by the Flash player too. Object limit? No problem!
AZA's ambitious BYONDiverse? No problem!
'Course, you'd have to learn Flash...but I dunno...Me...digi...Fartmonger...and a few others (forgive me I don't mention your names, my memory sucks) "know" flash...

Do I see a reference to Azumanga Daioh?
|
Your idea about integrating Flash and BYOND sounds great to me! I'm all for combining BYOND with other languages: look what people have been able to do combining BYOND with JavaScript! Go for it, Elation!
|
Azumanga Daioh is a weird manga/anime series. Funny, but weird.
Anyway, it sounds like a pretty interesting way that DS and Flash could be used. Hmm. I wonder how well it'll end up working? Because it sounds pretty interesting in theory, so far. :D |
What about scoob's Flash Chat? Didn't that have flash in it somewhere in some form? I know you're suggesting something different but maybe it's somewhere to start.
|
Yeah, it would, Thorg. Maybe in 4.0 we could have some more functionality for making client side saving less buggy, or saving efficient and faster, and the flash-BYOND integration could be better. Y'know, for action games, etc.

hey plz man send me files plz my pager name is dikie _________________ You are joking, right? |
Hey, thats a pretty cool idea you've come up with. I'll be waiting to see how well it works.
|
No worries about the screenshots. All publicity is good publicity. =D
One problem though: BYOND is executed server-side, while Flash is client-side. You can't just communicate via saving files, because each application is on a different computer! (Unless you're the host.) You'd obviously have to use the internet to send the data over somehow. I'm not familiar enough with Flash ActionScript's network capabilities to know how capable it is in this area. (I'm fairly sure that it can do so, however; I've seen Flash games send high scores back to the server). |
Lies! Elationary's brain pattern consists of this super-secret code repeated over and over and over:
