I read the DM Guide to learn the DM language when I started. I refer to the DM Reference while programming, to check specific things like argument ordering and so forth. In fact, that's the same process I use for any library or toolkit in any programming language.

I do recommend reading the DM Guide, and I also recommend reading through the "Your First World" and "Step BYOND" demos.
