I've always loved searching for hidden treasure and secret passages in videogames. Anyone who spent hours using their candle on every bush in the Legend of Zelda or bombing hundreds of suspicious looking tiles in Metroid knows just how thrilling the hunt for secrets could be back in the NES days. Needless to say, it would be a travesty to give this project the title NEStalgia without including these types of secrets!

Notice the out-of-place wall?

Oh snap!

Taking a page from the FF3 NES playbook, false walls and hidden passages play a major role in NEStalgia. Early in the game anyone with a sharp eye can spot these false walls... but later areas will require trial-by-error.

While in town I spot a treasure chest. After searching for a way to get to it, I discover some "fake trees" and walk through them to claim my prize!

Talking to every single towns person that you come across is important for two reasons, 1.) They may have a quest for you to take on, and 2.) They will occasionally drop hints/clues about potential secrets. Does anyone remember playing through Who Framed Roger Rabbit (NES) where at one point a character tells you to call a real phone number for more information? While I'm certainly not going to be giving out my cell phone number, you'll definitely want to pay close attention every scrap of text and dialogue that you can find.

In terms of development news, I'm happy to report that NEStalgia is coming along very well. Thanks to the tireless efforts of people like tenkuu and the rest of the private testing team, NEStalgia is on the fast track to completion, and you'll be treated to balanced, bug-free game from day one.
Seems neat. Is that interface with sreen objects or are you using BYOND's new-ish interface feature?
Very nice! Look forward to playing.
I've never bothered to ask until now, is this single player or multiplayer? I am going to assume single at the moment, because 'secrets' don't work too well in multiplayer games, imo.

In any event, looking forward to it!

Multiplayer. Just like DWO a major focus of the game is on partying with other players, not to mention PvP.
I'm a bit curious too.
Since Silk probably wouldn't be using any special transparency effects (anything needing DirectX) it could allow for him to use window elements instead of drawing onscreen, and then simply making those windows transparent.
It's an interesting idea, but he probably just lifted much of the actual framework straight from DWO (menus, text-on-screen, etc.)

Hey let's make sure solo is still viable. I'm fine with gaining an extra level or two to do without a partner, but don't punish me for soloing please.

Also, can we see a demo video sometime? I really want to see (hear?) what I'm missing!

Screen objects. Using hacky methods to get 4.0 interface panes onscreen doesn't appeal to me.

Nah, the DWO code is pretty archaic, and the HUDs were actually 100% images, not screen objects. The only project of my that I lifted code from here and there when creating NEStalgia was Acheron's Awakening.

Being someone who often prefers soloing, I'm working hard to balance the game for solo players and parties.

Yeah, I've been toying around with making a video. Also, the game does have a full soundtrack and sound effects.
This thing really is coming along great. I haven't really found any bugs that weren't already reported, they were just HUD screw ups.
