What does DM stand for, exactly? The language itself. I'm convinced I've read somewhere before that DM does not stand for anything, and shouldn't be confused with Dream Maker, the compiler that you write DM in. But I might just be crazy.

DM can stand for Dream Maker or Dantom. I'm not sure exactly which. Dantom is Dan + Tom, the creators of the language =)

I have a feeling it originated from.
#define MASTER_KEY "Dan" //The all-powerful super-user! Which is in the online guide, chapter 3 where Dan himself uses it and makes it appear that it was something he created as an example, i guess a self title for the god of the world. |
I'd say DM refers to either the language or the compiler. DM is to DM as Eclipse is to Java.
30 seconds of digging yielded this quote from BYOND 101: We designed the programming language behind BYOND games-- DM -- to handle multi-player interaction in a way such that the developer need not maintain the complex networking infrastructure. |
We had a discussion about this in The Saloon not too long ago, I believe the general consensus was BYOND probably needs rebranding. Partly because the name BYOND is almost toxic on other forums, but also because the naming conventions are a little wonky.
The software used to make games is called Dream Maker, it comes with a code editor, map editor, and sprite editor. The scripting language Dream Maker uses is called DM. The guide makes no reference to DM being an abbreviation. One could argue the true term is Dream Maker Language according to the wording found in the guide. |
I've always referred to the language as "D-M". I figured that they called it "DM" because the editor was called Dream Maker and they wanted it to be letters, like C.
|
Dungeon Master - You're the dungeon master of the games you make.
Dream Maker - Other than the literal, it's the name of the IDE. DM - It is what it is. That's what I think of it. |
The DM Guide refers to both "DM" and "Dream Maker"; in the preface, he states, "This language of worlds within worlds, of illusion become reality, is called DM, the Dream Maker."

Lolol.
