I'm not usually one to pimp products, but somewhat to my surprise I've found that the iPod does in fact make me a better person.
As in, I clean the bathroom more often. I make dinner more often. I learn more.
Why? Because I can listen to podcasts while doing things! This makes my natural resistance to any form of housework go away...sometimes I even want to do it! Very odd.
The existance of iPods led to the existance of podcasts, which led to more content in the world that I really want to listen to. I listen while gaming, I listen while programming. Here's my updated list of favorite podcasts:
Geek stuff
Geek Fu Action Grip
A 32-year old mommy who is a gaming and science fiction geek, and a writer. Entertaining, funny, and just plain good at writing essays about life for science fiction gaming geek types. Probably my favorite all-around podcast.
The Signal
A podcast about Firefly, the TV series and movie. Interviews with the actors and principles, lessons in the Chinese used on the show, and lots of geeky stuff.
Gaming stuff
BoardGameSpeak
Formerly known as GeekSpeak, this is in-depth interviews with people in the board game industry. Love it.
PC Gamer Podcast
Provided by the folks at PC Gamer, this talks about, naturally enough, PC games. Always good to have something that doesn't focus on consoles (which I don't play). Making me consider subscribing to their magazine.
Pulp Gamer
Non-electronic games...board games, traditional RPGs, etc.
Tech stuff
This Week in Tech
Leo Laporte, John Dvorak, and many of those involved in the old Screensavers TV show. Fun, easy listening about the tech news of the day.
NerdTV
Robert Cringely, long one of my favorite tech commentators, does in-depth interviews with luminaries in the computer field.
Brain stuff
In Our Time
Melvyn Bragg is one of the better interviewers of our time, who I originally discovered as part of the "South Bank Show" TV show. His topics range from history to science to philosophy. My brain hurts!
I'm evaluating several other podcasts now, and will no doubt post an update as I discover new gems.

I have to agree, ipods make me want to walk for two hours each day.

"I'm not usually one to pimp products, but somewhat to my surprise I've found that the iPod does in fact make me a better person." Ipods are for pimps!?!
|
Oh, it's Chinese. I was wondering about that. =)
It threw me a little when I first heard it... "Hey, what was that? It sounded cool but I have no idea what it meant." =P |
Crispy is referring to my description of The Signal, the podcast about Firefly. In the series they use Chinese for swear words (and a few non-swear words), and the podcast tells you what the Chinese phrases mean.
|
Yup. I thought that was clear enough as Deadron did mention Chinese in his post, but obviously not. =)
I actually watched the 11th episode of Firefly today, in which they mention for the first time that it's Chinese they speak. So if I'd waited a day before reading your post I wouldn't have posted at all, and much confusion would have been alleviated! That podcast does sound interesting. |
