My mom and I just had a brief discussion about work. My hours are worse than hers, in most cases -- I work 8 and a half hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch and a 15-minute paid break (which must be taken with the lunch break -- you can't have both at separate times), while she works 7 and a half. Consecutively, on more than one occasion, I've worked twelve of those 8.5 hour days, plus the daily commute (which is another forty five minutes combined) and getting up in the morning for the obligatory shower, shave, hairdo, and dressing, which is another hour (I like long showers ;-)).
Working that out, for twelve days straight, I spent 11 hours each day devoted exclusively to working or getting to/from work. Assuming I have 16 waking hours, and I spend about an hour of those waking hours eating, that means I have four free hours of leisure time... which I like to call my "don't piss me off" time.
What I'm curious about is how people can find the energy to go out and party on the weekends. By the time I get home, I'm already flatly exhausted, and yet I see people heading to parties, drinking their asses off, and coming into work with hangovers. I just can't fathom how they do it.

That's probably a pretty good indication that they're working none too hard during those 8 hours, you know.

I don't know. We are special people. We can handle long parties. I went all day getting ready for a football game, playing the entire game, and then finishing my night off by partying and not getting home until 6am. :)
I was tired but once you start having a good time and a few drinks you forget the pain. :) _Ryan |
As Leftley said, if you're going to work with a hangover, it can't be particularly difficult/supervised. Which means time to slack off.

Maybe the other departments are different, but in the seasonal and hardware departments I notice most everyone gets a list of at least six things that they need to do at any given time.
It's the automotive and cash depts. that I mostly hear this sort of thing from... |
I don't know how they do it...
There are a couple of guys who work with me that will start drinking after work in the morning (I work a 6p-6a shift), and have to be back later that night... Well, maybe if that was as important to me as it seems to be to them, I'd understand how or why, but since it isn't, I just don't get it... |
