How can I kick a computer or ban it from my network if I just have a WRT54G for a linksys router. He's able to log on to the router and delete or pages even after a hard reset. Today for the first time I'm able to view him in my workgroup.
I suspect he has something on one of my computers on my network, but AVG reports nothing, and hijack this reports nothing.
The last time I checked the log the ip address pointed to Amsterdam. But I'm starting to suspect its an evil neighbor (this guy has had more domestic disputes in 1 year for beating his girlfriends than anyone I've ever seen on cops).
If I had a way to attack his computer for his malicious intent (or for keeping me up in the morning at 3AM with his disorderly conduct), I'd be thrilled.
I know bare minimum network related stuff. So even resources that seem to be quick and to the point about networking and common ways of hacking a router would be useful for me (I'm useing WPA2 and a highly secure password (which I've changed more times than I care to think about)).
Help!

Unplug it for the night and laugh. Hehe, that second suggestion is very tempting. |
You could setup MAC filtering then add your MAC addresses from your computers and just filter out the rest. I have the exact same router so I know you can do it. The only problem is if you have someone over and they bring a laptop or something you will have to add there MAC address to the list.

Set up an Access Restriction, and set it up so that IPs outside of the range of your computers will not have access 24/7. So, if you have three computers with DHCP, you're probably bouncing around with .100, .101, and .102 with a WRT54G. So, set up an access restriction to block all internet activity from IPs .1-.99 and .103-.254
I can't quite recall the WRT54G's original interface since it's kinda lame, but it should provide you with this much power. If not, install the Tomato Linux firmware for it, totally great. I do this exact thing so I don't need to have a password for the wireless, but no one can do anything on the network. The best option is, if you're router has it (there's like 9 versions of the WRT54G, depending how new it is), use WPA2 encryption for your password. WEP can be cracked in about 30 seconds, and from what I've seen WPA has been cracked recently as well. |
Soldiermans Mac filtering idea is probally the most effective and not forgetting efficient, I use the exact same system for my internet and there is no real hassle other than inserting the mac-address for a device into the router settings itself to get it properly connected to the router. It's safe, easy, and quite fun for some reason :)

Also setting static IP's is a good idea, but won't stop someone else from manually assigning the same IP address to there computer; which would cause IP conflicts and make your two computers fight for the same IP and windows would start prompting you about it. All he would need to do is look with ipconfig and see he can not get a IP from your router and just manually set his nic card settings to the lowest IP like 192.168.1.100 and the conflicts would begin causing intermittent connection with whatever computer has that IP.
Routers can't determine which computer it is talking they just route to whatever talks to it; maybe a expensive router could but low-end routers a dumb. |
If you have a junk PC laying around, I think Jeff's is the nastiest way to exact revenge.

If you can see his computer, see if you can see his files, and if you can, extract a virus directly onto his computer yourself, then just shut down the network and go on vacation.

It has to be a particularly nasty one, too. I would recommend both a dropper and a virus that messes with the registry keys =) |
You don't want to destroy his computer, you just want to slow him down massively so that he can't download porn on your router.

Just putting a virus on his computer won't work he would have to be dumb enough to execute it. I doubt anyone seeing some random file in his shared folder(if he is evening sharing his files) would be dumb enough to click a random .exe or some kind of script file like a .bat file, but you never know.

Lol, I never thought about that; putting porn in the title could not hurt either.

There's always upsidedown-ternet:
http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pete/upside-down-ternet.html Really though, setting the router to use a MAC whitelist will probably do it. Be sure to upgrade the router firmware to the latest version in case he's using some hack to control it. |
I vote you don't do anything, and continue to let him leech of of you.
P.S. keep it down up there. |
I don't know about letting some stranger on your internet, he could be looking at kiddy-porn or contacting Al-Qaeda.

EDIT: Or infect your entire network with a virus. I would recommend using a crap computer for this, and removing all important computers from the network before hand.
