May as well thought I would offer it up to be read by many rather than just my history teacher. It seems a shame to write something, but not have anyone read it. Any suggestions before I hand it in on Friday?

Imperialism Essay

Imperialism us when one country takes control of another either through the military or economy. In the case of the United States, we should, in some people's minds, be against imperialism. However, many US officials were - and still are - actually for Imperialism; the result of this belief was the US becoming a super power and entering main wars. Personally, I believe in Imperialism - we have or could have saved countless lives in some countries if we intervened.
Contrary to popular belief, most of the US's Imperialism benefits other countries. While many isolationists disagreed with the Vietnam War because of the amount of American life lost, we have to consider other factors, such as what would happen after the US withdrew its troops. Many would think, off the top of their head, that countless lives would be saved. However, there is not a more incorrect statement in the world. After we left Vietnam, thousands of Vietnamese people lost their lives, the Chinese minority was repressed, and the troops we were assisting were placed in reeducation camps against their will.
Isolationism is also why we entered WWI so late; the Germans took over much land before then. While many European soldiers died, we just sat in our own far off country doing nothing. No matter how much Germany harmed our country, whether it was the sinking of the Lusitania or another matter, we continued to do nothing. It took the direct threat of war (the Zimmerman note) to take action against this threat that could have been dispatched of much quicker. We could have ended the war more rapidly and saved countless lives; we could have protected our interests and our allies' interests, but no, we followed a policy of isolationism and stood back to watch the destruction unfold before us.
Imperialism also let us surpass other nations in terms of power. It allows us to further introduce our democratic beliefs to other nations, and allow lesser nations to experience the American dream. This also allows us to prevent the spread of dangerous, unbalanced, corrupt governments, such as Fascism and Communism. Without this power, the Soviet Union would likely have been the only major super power in the world during the Cold War era - a very disturbing prospect. As Albert Beveridge said, "It is a noble land that God has given us: a land that can feed and clothe the world; a land whose coastlines would enclose half the countries of Europe; a land set like a sentinel between the two imperial oceans of the globe," which means that we, the US, have the ability to assist others, and guard them when they are threatened by a greater power. We are but the force that keeps all the other nations of the world in check, all thanks to this power gained through Imperialism.
In conclusion, all modern Americans, and most other people in the world, have been helped by US imperialism. It gives us our relatively high standard of living, and it gives other nations the idea that they, too, can have a say in their own government. We help other nations more than we hurt them, and stand up for the people of the world.
You misspelled globe as glob near the end. You should manually look for misspelled words, since some misspells are real words.

Great essay by the way.

Already fixed that and some others; I was editing the post while you read it, most likely. I found a few mistakes, and fixed the conversion errors from MS Word 2000 (old word FTW).
Hey Jeff,

Tough subject, probably too large for a five paragraph essay. Good work! A few quick notes:

1) Your second paragraph doesn't support your initial assertion. That is, the lack of failure of non-imperialism does not equate to success with imperialism. You should probably look at the spread and integration of science and technology as a positive side effect of Byzantine and English imperialism.

2) Anti-isolationism isn't imperialism. You may want to scrap that third paragraph altogether.
