I have been browsing though a couple of games the last few weeks, i have seen pixel art of high quality and i have seen pixel art that truly wasn't pleasent to watch at.
Now on Byond most of the people call this icons, but on the internet it's mostly refered to as pixel art, now I was wondering. What would be a better name to call those artists who work hard ( most of the time ) on their pixels.
The official name would be, i guess Pixel artists, but seeïng as how many people call them iconers i am wondering ...
Is it because the default "icon" size is only 32x32 that people don't consider our pixelwork as pixelart and thus calling it something else ? or is it just internet slang ?

Iconner is slang, just like coder.

I always hated "Iconner". It always struck me as slang for some kind of "lesser" pixel artist. Like the work they do is comparable to little smileys and buddy pics you see on AIM or something. I do my traditional pixel work primarily in Photoshop, not DM (Hate that thing for making stuff), and just split it into the 32x32 later. Really, I kinda use "Iconner" and "Icons" as a bit of an insult, and "Pixel artist"/"Artist" and "Sprites" as a compliment.

I dislike the saying "Iconner" because it isn't a word. Also, Icon is not a verb.

If they're making larger things, it's pixel art.
However, if it's someone who is making specifically 32x32s...I usually call them an icon artist. Just don't use "iconner" and you'll be fine. |
Any self-respecting artist would gag at being called "iconer"
On the plus side though it's great for avoiding the type of people who aren't very good at programming/drawing. |
Its Pixel Artist, Iconner is some retarded slang word that came from who knows where.
I agree with eveyrthing else thats already been said by everyone else in this thread. |
