I don't know about you guys, but every now and again, I come across a person or two who says something I disagree with, and they exit the argument with a comment like "it's my opinion, you can't argue an opinion!"

Well, buddy, I have news for you! See, I have a friend who is just like you, and we spent 5 weeks in a van touring Australia, and naturally, we had a lot of arguments.

On the first day of our van trip, we opened the whole "can opinions be argued" to debate.

Long story short, we came to the conclusion.

No, you can't argue an opinion. However, we can argue statements. And when you state your opinion, you have opened the statement of your opinion for debate.

We also came to the conclusion, somewhere along the line, that in order to actually have an opinion, you have to keep it to yourself, or voice it in a place where absolutely no one can hear it.

Yep, I'm bored.
VERY....bored.
I disagree with that.
Or you could simply enunciate (as in make distinctly audible / readable, or communicate efficiently) your opinion, by mentioning that there is no intent for a statement nor debate.

However, should someone voice disagreement over something you stated, there is no way in hell the above can apply to that person. He is just "fair game", at this point.
"It's my opinion" is exactly the same as "You don't know me!" - the hallmark of the moron.

As much as I agree with that, I'm going to have to agree.
I've stated this elsewhere, but the primary problem with society is the unwillingness to view the world from someone else's eyes, or god forbid, acknowledge the unique background and foresight someone else possesses. We've become so tunnel-visioned as a planet that it's rare to find someone willing to step outside their own comfort zone or knowledge base to take a fresh perspective into consideration, and as such, it's common to run into these brash idiots who think everything they think is correct and everything the rest of the world thinks is incorrect, which is a pigheaded and unintelligent thing to do.

With that in mind, opinions are a culmination of one person's knowledge, perceptions and instincts, and no one person can ever be aware of (or even comprehend) the countless bits of knowledge that are missing from their own view of the world. As such, every opinion is up for debate with no exceptions.

This is also why I don't believe in omniscient deities -- even a god has exactly one perception of the world.
