For some reason this only happens when I play GTA IV, but I always get half a RRoD about five minutes or so into the game. oblivion works just dandy and I can play demos quite a while, does anybody know what's going on?
Sounds like an error with your 360. Try contacting Microsoft support and getting the correct diagnoses from them.
The error is that you bought a faulty piece of hardware. Crappy 360's; I have yet to hear of a problem with a PS3. Too bad it doesn't have many good games yet >_>
The RRoD isn't one error or bug, its actually a system for communicating errors (much like how your computer beeps when you power it up). So make sure to note exactly which quarters are lit up.

The only time I've ever got a Red Ring error was when I accidentally knocked the video cable out of the console a little (that said, the laser in the disc drive died about 8 months after I brought it).

If I were you I would probably disconnect and reconnect everything (power, video, HDD) then see if it still happens. If that doesn't fix it, remove the HDD unit and play without it.

After that you should know if its worth calling tech support. You could also check out the XBOX Scene forums in the mean-time. Their community members have a lot of experience dealing with this sort of stuff and should be helpful (and you wont get anyone saying 'buy a PS3/Wii' instead of helping). Just be cautioned, no matter what they say don't do anything extreme (ie, purposely over-heating the 360 or replacing the disc drive). Microsoft are pretty good when it comes to replacing broken 360 systems so you don't want to void your warranty.

Mine gets really hot but I don't play it that often so its never caused a problem. I find it really unsettling that both the PS3 and the XBOX 360 pretty much spew flames when they run in a normal environment. If I had the PS3 and the XBOX 360 running at the same time I'm fairly sure I could actually cook with the combined heat.
Yeah, I got a nice little 20-30$ fan for Christmas that keeps my PS3 nice and cool =]. Either way, look on the bright side - it reduces your heating bills in winter.
Thanks DarkView, it kept it running for about an extra 25 minutes, but still it persists. Guess I'll just sell it.

Supposedly Microsoft will give you a new one/repair it for free. I hear it takes a long time (4-6 weeks+ or something), though.

Don't sell it. A) Selling a broken XBOX to someone is a dick of a thing to do to someone. B) You'll probably get next to nothing for it (even if they think it works perfectly). C) Microsoft will probably swap it for a new one.

When my laser broke it took me a couple of weeks from launching the problem to getting my new 360, but overall the experience was actually pretty good. The hardest part was taking it to the post office and mailing it.

That should be the first step in getting it all sorted out.

If you're not interested in keeping the console I recommend replacing it through warranty and selling the new XBOX they send you instead. You probably wont make much more money but at least it'll cost Microsoft something.
One last thing I forgot to mention. If you do sell it, format any and all memory devices you're selling with it. A friend of mine almost sold his XBOX 360 without removing his profile, which wouldn't have been a big deal except for the fact his profile had his personal details and credit card information attached.

I think stores like EB power up the consoles and remove that sort of stuff, but its not something you can really count on.
