Well, here's a conundrum.

After months of hearing positive things about The Witcher, I broke down and bought it. I have enough access to games already -- games I've bought and not yet played, and the vast number of games available through my GameTap subscription, that I'm only willing to buy a game if it's clear it will hold special appeal. And when people keep discussing a game in podcasts months after it was released, especially when it's about the game being for adults and containing real and interesting decisions, and having a great story, eventually I cave in.

So I bought The Witcher, and I've been playing through it slowly and enjoying the heck out of it. I'm not far in (just got out of jail, through the sewers and into the city that comes after the starting region). Then while visiting Guy, he mentioned hearing about some special version of the game being released. Turns out he was referring to the extended edition that is in the works, which contains some major upgrades for the English/US market.

And this brings me to my conundrum...I'm only a few hours into the game. Do I wait until September or so to play the extended edition, or do I play through the gimped version now and play through again when released?

So far I like it enough, and there are enough ways to customize your character as you progress, that I don't see an issue with replaying it. But I will miss experiencing the best possible version of the story on the first time through.

Oh what, dear readers, should I do?
If you think you'll enjoy the replay value, play through it all now and then play the extended version.

If not, find something else to play. ;O
The same logic could be applied to hardware- should I play through this game now, or should I wait until my hardware'll eak* out a bit more FPS and higher resolution for a better experience?

Ultimately you'll never get anything done, so just keep playing through it, then do it again if the extended version warrants it.

(Er, I think that works. Yeah.)

*is eak a word? I swear eak is a word.
The patch sounds really good, and given the choice you'd obviously choose it, but if you're enjoying it why stop?

The only reason I'd wait is that now I know which parts they're going to 'fix' I'm going to view those parts as being broken.
It'd be like playing the original Hitman game after playing the latest in the series. Things you originally didn't even notice the first time now seem like serious problems.
Until it's on the shelves (or the download links), anything can happen. I'd say go ahead and play it now. Then, when the new edition comes out, you can -- to borrow a phrase from Lucasfilm -- "experience it again for the very first time."
I'd play it now, with any luck you'll forget some of the cool parts by the time you have another go at it. I recently watched someone play Portal and still thoroughly enjoyed listening to the robot and reading the writings on the walls.
Well given the long weekend, this will be as good a time as any...

"Eak" is not, but "eke" is.
