After over a decade of 28.8 kilobits (or less) dial up speed, I finally join the ranks of the broadband users.

Apparently some rich prick is building a huge agricultural factory of some manner about five miles down the road, and my phone provider stuck a DSL repeater switch right outside the building just for him. Lucky for me, that put me -just- outside the service area, and I managed to coerce CenturyTel into giving me service anyways.

It's only 512 asymmetrical broadband, but 64 kilobytes per second is a hell of an improvement over 2.

Oh, and, I chose an Australian server because I wanted to see what my connection would be like between me and a computer at the furthest distance possible from where I'm sitting.
Your net speed is still slow....

Go use 28.8 dialup for thirteen years, then switch to 512 asymmetrical and tell me it's not a godsend.
True, but who in the hell would use dial up for thirteen years? Just seems kind of... Stupid.
Some people don't have a choice because of their location, which I'm pretty sure is Mobius's case.
Indeed. I live in the sticks and dial up was the best I could get until last Tuesday.
Gratz. =)

I can sympathize. My cousin keeps calling me long distance to do all of his internet searches and shopping. ;)

Now that you seem a bit more active... Should we expect a Chess update in the near future? It took me quite a while to realize the amount of polish it might have, but the lack of descriptions for some pieces means it can't be featured in BYOND Strategy. Meanwhile, I didn't know if you were around to nag for fairy piece guarantees.

onoes, work!

In all seriousness though, Chess does need some finishin' and I suppose I can get it done (in real time for a change) and see if I can get the fairy pieces duct taped together. The primary problem I'm having is lack of consistency involving the piece sprites at any rate...
Now I'm officially one of ten people in the entire universe with dial-up. I was gonna get satellite ordered this week, but it turns out I'm not good enough for their 'pay for the equipment as part of your bills' system and they want their equipment costs up front -- which is far more than I can afford at one time. So I'm stuck with dial-up still.

Yeah, I had the same problem with satellite internet here. They wanted $420 for the equipment and wanted a minimum of $220 up front.
