I've recently got back in touch with an old friend. Shes about my age and well, In my opinion she is -very- shallow. Interested in only remedial adolescent things. I want to open Her mind to the Depth of Life, and all things around her. Although she is academically smart, I know for a fact reading a book on her own would NOT be a choice. Buuuuttt I think I can swing one her way and shell read it. That is, if its not a hard read and very interesting.
So now I'm down to choosing a book to suggest. Of course, I'd have to read it first. Something easy to read and Mind opening.
What do you guys think?

perks of being a wallflower.

Well, a book that has made me think differently is Nineteen Eighty Four. Of course, I've always loathed the stereotypically junior-high and high-school things, so I've never been one to think like others, anyways.

Possibly, but it helps that Orwell liked to refrain from using words that were complicated. If one can't grasp the concepts he puts out there, or the reasons why things are as they are, then they have to be incredibly stupid. She's supposedly academically smart, so it shouldn't be incredibly difficult.

1984 really seems interesting, for me anyway. A bit too heavy for her though. Reading up on it reminded my about Fahrenheit 451, I read it a few years ago, it was pretty awesome, but that too, might be too heavy.
So far, the perks of being a wallflower sounds like a good choice. |
let me tell you, all of my dumb friends like that god damn book. i loved it and all, but they swear by it like a fucking bible. she'd jump the bandwagon real quick.

perks of being a wallflower. agreed, it's in my top 10 favorite books. it was also banned last year from my school district. |
Ishmael - Daniel Quinn
Thus Spoke Zarathustra - Friedrich Nietzsche Dismantling Discontent - Charles Fisher The World Without Us - Alan Weisman Then again, those are not light reading. But from that list, Ishmael is the easiest, and is interesting. Also depending on what you want her to understand, really any classic book will give her something. The Prince, Poetics, The Republic, The Dialogues, etc. |
