Airjoe recently brought to my attention that he had a copy of the project files for the 2007 Game in a Day event (GiaD).

[Random squiggly symbols denoting bewilderment and curse words]

So I hastily obtained a copy of this rare and much sought after file and began the process of judging the entries. I then offered up my results (to several persons who shall remain un-named) as an xml file so that they could offer their critique and perhaps judge as well... this didn't happen. The participants I talked with still wanted to see the results of my judging, so I offer them here. Consider this the definitive judging of the 2007 GiaD.

Game in a Day Results

I may even spell check the final product once I get some sleep.
Wow, very very shocking indeed. Much appreciated.
When is game in a day 2008? I intend to enter this time.:/
Uh, was my entry so bad that it wasn't mentioned? Becuase I know I entered an entry...

Those are all the entries which were in the zip file I received. If you made a game for the event, then you can send it to me. If I receive it by the end of today, then I'll show it to someone I know who saw all the entries. If he remembers it (or if we both agree to allow it) then I'll put it on the list. But I have to get it today.

Send it to my email address. I use gmail, and my account is iainperegrine.

The other two were in mid september, so I imagin the next one will be help in september, also.
You said that Tiberath could have easily made the game before hand and simply changed the boxes(which we don't know if he did or not, I didn't stand behind him when he programmed it). However, if you really think about it... that could be said about any of the entries there.

Aceblokes tower game could have easily been 2 towers that show lightning bolts or cannon balls at each other, which he simply changed to ice and fire after wards.

That other gay that the bird(I think it's a bird) that transformed between fire and ice, that could have easily been it transforming from a bird to a transformer.

I guess it's really too hard to tell when it comes to a topic as simple as "fire and ice".
I would just like to defend myself and say I did do the game on the day, without planning before, and with the intention that it could be upgraded later post-GiaD to include stuff like different elements.

:p

Nice though, 3rd on the list :D
To Mikau:

Though I do agree that certain games could have been made before hand and then given a Frost and Flame face life, you'll notice that my reason for disqualifying Tiberath was because it didn't make "sufficient use of the event's theme".

So even though I'm almost certain that a large amount of the hobo simulator's code came from the old version, I still was impressed by its creative take on the theme. In fact, it's the funny description of burning each of the items in that game which made up my mind to include it. Tiberath's game, though well made, included the theme almost as an afterthought; the theme makes zero impact on gameplay.

Think "Iron Chef" (if you've ever seen the program). A dish made by a challenger may taste great, but it's going to be scored largely based on how inventively it included the theme ingredient. If the ingredient is used as nothing more than a garnish on the plate, the dish will score poorely.
Don't worry, I was just using you as an example Acebloke, simply for the fact that you could change the graphic of the projectiles so easily to change the theme of the game.

Which was mostly my point to begin with. Most of the theme came from simple graphics, which was really what Tiberath did. Had Tiberath not made the graphics as simplistic as he had(no offense to you, Lee), would the thought have changed? Perhaps if it wasn't a simple box that said [ice], but in fact a detailed ice glacier, and the [fire] box to be more of a burning flame.

When it comes down to it, the game is still simply a mob pushing an object onto another object, but the graphics change it to look more like flames and icicles.
To Mikau:
So what are you arguing? Do you want me to disqualify Acebloke's entry (plus any others' that you don't feel meet the criteria I've disqualified Tib's on), or do you want me to throw out my condition that games must follow the theme?

I do feel that Tiberath's entry does not follow the theme of the event, and I do not feel that way about any other entry. If you give me a reason as to why I should change my judging policy, then I'll listen, but I disagree that Tib made use of the theme just as much as Acebloke or anyone else, so it's no use arguing that point.
HAHAHA! Wow that was a lot of fun!
You know, I actually managed to fix most of the problems and made the game playable 30 minutes after the deadline. =\

It turned out that the projectile collision detection wasn't working because I forgot a single minus sign in the code. XD

I also ended up implementing terrain shading to help with the perception of height.
The download link for the .rar file doesn't seem to work!

Fixed, try it now.
My entire point was that it's way too hard to tell if something followed the criteria to start with. Any of those entries could have been made beforehand. Your judgment was your own opinion and nothing I say can, nor should change that fact, since it is in fact your opinion.

I wasn't trying to sway your judgment, merely stating how easy it could have been that any of those entries could have been built beforehand.

I guess that's what happens when you have a vague theme such as "fire and ice."
