As some of you may know, I've been gone from BYOND again for awhile. It just seems BYOND to me is slowly dieing. I joined guilds and tried to help by bringing up the community while I played, but noone really cares. I find that most players are more into the games that have been played hundreds of times, which eventually lose taste. I still can see that Anime has stolen BYOND.
Over all this time I see pretty much NO games in genres other than Anime, that I have not seen before. Players make anime games now. Action, Casual, and RPG which I find WERE the main three sections that amused me on BYOND have the same old games. I was working on some games as you may have known, I was thinking that someday I'd return and finish them. But many players would probably prefer to have a nice game of Naruto Way of Shinobi, or Bleach: Los Nachos? Am I not correct?
Well, I came to join back but now I still see no reason to do this. I really feel like BYOND's community has just driven downward over the years, and now it is at the breaking point where BYOND is going to be called:
BYAND(Build Your Anime Net Dream)
Anyway, I'm sort of done with this. I think I might just release my sources, since they could goto waste. But someday if BYOND can finally turn back into what it used to be. I'd like to give it a taste of what I was working on for so long.

It seems kinda weird that you're basing your activity here on the existence of games that, in fact, don't affect you. To me, at least.
I mean, hatin' on anime games and rips is pretty common, but losing motivation to work on your own projects because of them? It's not like they're preventing you from making a good non-anime game. |
Eh, you just gotta live with it, I say. We're trying our best to make FTHA a game that's up 24/7 under the Action Guild in hopes new people will try it and we do have a good number of people that come on everyday. But, as you have said, most of the BYOND Community is focusing on their Anime Games rather than Action, Casual, and RPG games. And that's what we need more of.
Still, you should try and keep at it. Some of the games I see there on your list look pretty interesting to me. |
Well, the community prefers to play games that are anime. Which makes players want to make them. I just find that BYOND does not get any new games these days, other than Anime. That is what kind of prevents me.
I don't want to make a game that I find it good, but the players will say "Why don't you make a Naruto game too? IT'D BE COOL, LIKE YOU GET INSTANT LVL 1000?" |

Some anime fan got a hold of me through MSN and "demanded" that I give him the source code to some unfinished project that I had been talking about in a game. He didn't politely ask for it, or even ask for it. He demanded that I give it to him and then started threatening me. Saying how he'd get me banned from the game, hack my computer and how he had already put a virus on it, among other things. |
Flame, I once felt the same way about BYOND but I've learned to just ignore it. Though, you may create a game that does not get as much playtime an anime game I think it's for the better. I rather have a few respected members of the BYOND community to play my game instead of a bunch of immature kids.

No, they're just making it much more difficult to attract decent players to your games because BYOND now has a bad reputation among other gaming communities, so not only are you going to be flooded with idiots trying to figure out how to kill things in your game regardless of what the game is, but decent players will be harder to find AND pushed away by the idiot hordes. It also makes intelligent feedback on your projects much harder to come by. |
Boo freakin' hoo. So BYOND has a lot of anime games. Get over it. Nobody is saying you, or the small part of the community that isn't part of the anime guild has to play them.
I quite enjoy my time on BYOND daily, and I never touch an anime game. There are tons of games on here that have nothing to do with anime, you're just blinded by your own stupidity. ...and yes, I too have in fact been harassed by anime fanboys, and I dealt with them just as any other sane person would. With two words, "Get friends." |
Whether I'm blinded by my own stupidity or not, I do agree that the anime crowd IS dragging BYOND down, not because of the games but because of the players they attract.
It doesn't ruin the experience enough for me to leave, it just makes it considerably more unpleasant, frustrating and unsatisfying. |

How is it going to be hard to attract decent players to a non-anime game? It seems a lot easier than attracting decent players to an anime game, to be honest. On the other point, if idiots are disruptive, it's not hard to ban them. And, from the point of view as someone playing a game, I don't really look to the 'idiot hordes' to decide if I like the game or not. I could understand if this were the regular community of said game, but if it's just some random BYONDer trying out the game, who cares? People who are typically turned off by that are generally fickle anyway. I can understand why it's frustrating for you as someone who moderates the Developer forums, Foomer. And it's pretty obvious to everyone that (popular shonen anime of the time) games attract young kids and make your job harder. But I don't think it's as good of a reason to get discouraged working on a game(s) because of it. One HAS to directly deals with the brats daily, but the other just seems like self-defeating. |
I rely on positive feedback from people to motivate me into working on my games. Typically the anime fanbase isn't a good source for positive feedback, they're more into arguing, flaming and backbiting. But a lot of the people who WOULD offer positive feedback on my projects end up feeling like Flame Guardian here - they don't want to be around this community because of the type of people here, so they leave. That means I have less people giving me decent feedback on my work. And I won't work on projects if there doesn't appear to be anyone around who cares.
Basically the anime crowd drives away my potential players. That's why I'm very interested in ways of extending BYOND past its community boundries. |
Considering there hasn't been much advertising of BYOND. I think most of it's community is coming from the fact that the anime kids are telling their anime friends.
If we want more people that aren't just interested in anime, we have to do it ourselves instead of just complaining about it. |

As guilty as i am in this reguard, i do completely agree with you flame. There are far too many unintelligent anime games/players on BYOND, and its sad to see that there isnt really anything new for the other guilds. I do plan on making an rpg eventually. But one project at a time for me.
And not all the anime fans are idiots. I agree with Mikau though, we should be advertising BYOND to those Roleplaying communities. |

But one project at a time for me. Actually, Foomer is right. I personally know quiet a lot of people who wont use or even give BYOND a chance. Why? "Because there is no good games made with BYOND" so logically "BYOND is a crap program for making games". Where did all of these people get this image of BYOND from? Anime games. Some of them from when the only anime games were Dragon Ball Zeta and it's numerous rips. I have personally tried advertising BYOND on other websites, most of them large in size and some of them dedicated to amateur game development. Lets put it this way. I doubt I got BYOND any new members. I think the only time I have ever seen a BYOND game mentioned outside of the BYOND website in a way that was not entirely negative was Lodewars, and a community hosting a game and playing among themselves. Honestly, it is so stupidly hard to even advertise BYOND. There is very few decent games (and those aren't hosted regularly enough, or aren't even avaliable for download) and the image the BYOND community has created for it's self is not a very good one. Maybe if more good games that are not anime one were made we might be able to advertise BYOND better (fun fact, one week I monitored the growth of guilds. The Anime guild got around 60 new games, RPG guild got 1, the rest got none). Because at the moment Byond = SHIT ANIMU GAMES STAY AWAY IF YOU HAVE A BRAIN (EVEN IF IT IS THE SIZE OF A PEANUT). Not much we can do about the situation from the looks of things :[ Unless we get a lot of good none anime games we wont get a nice community, and the community we have now is basically killing off everything that is not part of the anime community (one way or another). |
