We still need a better host though. :( :( Don't insult my server! You'll hurt it's feelings! |

Mouse interfaces tend to annoy me, and having to use the mouse to aim while using the keyboard to move around is not at all convenient.

Does it have to be real-time? I have an idea, but I'm not sure it's precisely what you're looking for - I was thinking a tactics game. Kids are your units, you take it in turns to move them somewhere in their movement range and perform an action - whether it's throwing a snowball or building a fort wall.
Although I'm not sure I'll be able to do this - I don't really have reliable access to a Windows computer right now, and I'm working full time for the near future. |
He said jump right in and start throwing snowballs. Doing all that is more complicated than what he wants I am sure.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing a tactics game. I lean more to action than tactics myself but a good tactical snowball fight could be cool. Of course in a case like that, I suppose I'd have to make an exception to the mouse rule.

Haven't 'mouse & keyboard' interfaces been a staple of action-oriented games for several years, now?
|
Yes, and that's why action games do better on consoles than on the PC--because such interfaces suck. Using the mouse and keyboard at the same time is not conducive to action. And if the keyboard is relied on for movement as in this case, a bad interface becomes an impossible one.

Well, at least with 4.0, we can actually do WASD instead of playing Virtual Twister with the numeric keypad and the mouse.
I hardly even like first-person shooters, but I still kick ass at most WASD+mouse FPSes. Back when Quake II came out and it was popular on the high school's LAN (before they put a stop to it), I was one of the few people who used that scheme right from the beginning. I was sort of thinking of that old Flash snowball fight game where the interface was entirely mouse driven, with dragging and dropping to dodge snowballs and clicking and holding to throw. <HK47> Clarification: I don't have time to enter the contest, meatbag. I was merely postulating a possibility. |
I'm signing in my little snowball game, http://games.byond.com/hub/Vegetassj9/Snowballwar
Just check it out and I hope I win ^_^ |
That's an excellent idea, Lummox!
I'll try and do my best. Also, are libraries allowed? And if they are, would that affect the final grade? |

I believe the makers of every PC first person shooter ever would like to have a word with you. Seriously though, that couldn't be any further from the truth? Have you never played Unreal Tournament? Half Life? First Person interfaces don't have to be as simplistic as WASD + Mouse 1 and sometimes 2. Gary's Mod allows for the creation of complex physics based machinery using a mouse and keyboard driven interface, and I'd consider its interface a success given the game it resides in. Getting closer to home, though, since 3D first-person situations aren't really feasable on BYOND, overhead 2D games have done well with the mouse and keyboard combination as well. The mouse often controls a pointer that your character constantly faces. It just seems that you're damning contest entries to either grounding their design in something aside from action, or forcing their players to move left then face down to accurately throw a snowball at an enemy that's not in a direct line to any one of the player's eight cardinal directions. |
I don't think he would mind if someone proved him wrong with a clean mouse+KB interface :-)
If I had more time off, I would enter, but, alas, I do not.... |

(In fairness, Quake had other flaws like its horrendously lame weapon sound effects.) Duke 3D was the last 3D game (albeit more 2.5D) that I could actually play easily. Interfaces where I move with one hand and aim with the other annoy the piss out of me. Seriously though, that couldn't be any further from the truth? Have you never played Unreal Tournament? Half Life? I tried Half-Life a bit, but didn't get into it. It was not for me. Getting closer to home, though, since 3D first-person situations aren't really feasable on BYOND, overhead 2D games have done well with the mouse and keyboard combination as well. The mouse often controls a pointer that your character constantly faces. I've dealt with that kind of interface before. Playing Airsoft on BYOND--which, granted, was not by any means a complete game--was one reason I so specifically ruled out a mouse+keyboard deal. The game had good points; the interface was not one of them. It just seems that you're damning contest entries to either grounding their design in something aside from action, or forcing their players to move left then face down to accurately throw a snowball at an enemy that's not in a direct line to any one of the player's eight cardinal directions. Or, requiring some kind of auto-aiming or quick target selection. In other words, I'm requiring the designer to actually do some thinking about their interface instead of sticking with bad designs that only work well for hardcore gamers who put up with them for lack of knowing any better. |
I actually trapped myself in :( Though, I have to admit, that's pretty good (except that I am bigger than the snowmen and trees >_>)
